Philly vs. New York - Dubstep scene

Post by sofa_king » Fri May 14, 2010 2:35 pm

I'm from New York City, but I work in Princeton, NJ, and went to school in PA, so I have the pleasure of attending events in both Philly and New York. Just wondering if people had any comments about the different scenes in Philly and NYC. Even though I'm a New Yorker and I love Dub War, I think Philly's scene is really quite enchanting. Smaller venues, everything is cheaper, more intimate vibes, Seclusias Crew running that shit all the time. I've been to Philly shows in those warehousey type places that were just a blast. I've seen Starkey in what was basically someone's apartment. Obviously, New York does everything bigger, but with dubstep I think Philly really holds it down. Love is great but you also have to deal with places like Webster Hall, which I despise.

Anyone else able to compare the two? This isn't meant to stir up city rivalries (I'm not a baseball fan), just comment if you have any observations about the different vibes.

we have plenty of smaller more intimate & cheaper situations as well... in fact thats what makes nyc what it is... we have the full range... huge, large, medium, small & tiny... legit & loft... all week and on the weekend its just too much.

of course the flagship crews & venues hold it down, but its the in betweens, randoms, mixed genre & whatnots that give us flavor that if you want to know my biased opinion, philly & baltimore combined cant fuck with. i love both tho, dont get it twisted lol, and yall have your shit poppin no doubt... but you cant even talk about "dubstep" in nyc, we have like 4 different full blown dubstep scenes here lol

Well....here's my opinion, since I've played in NY - philly and B'more....... I think NY has been up on dubstep a bit longer than philly. when I first started play dubstep in philly, they didnt know what it was. As far as which is better? it depends on what your looking for. My best reception has been in B'more by far... I was surprised that they knew all the tracks!!! even the newest ones!!! So, which is better? All of them!! Just keep pushing the sound you love and just keep supporting the events you like!!

Human?...since you work in Princeton, we should make plans for you to come to New Brunswick and play on my show one of these Fridays... holla atcha boi!

ultimately, there's no competition between nyc and philly. its all love, because philly just like nyc were near enough to each other that there's so many similarities. philly dj's would be up here all the time , and vice versa. if you google the history of club fluid in philly, its like a mirror to the sort of lineup's we had here in nyc. you can't talk about philly without naming starkey and dev 79. those dudes had one of the first grime radio shows in america, and were also one of the first to push grime/sublow/eski/dubstep, alongside grimecity crew in san fran, and texans Mundo and Keith E. mad love for those guys, and like i said, they were/are family up here.

as there's so many new people into this now, its always good to talk about the nyc history....

1999-2003 drive-by NYC. the first regular party mixing 2step/breaks/early/proto dubstep. party was run Dinesh (core member of Horsepower productions), with other nyc residents like reid speed, and for a time benny ill (also of Horsepower Prod)
http://energyflashbysimonreynolds.blogs ... 2step.html

1999-2010 the bunker crew at subtonic (underneath tonic). they had plastician/mark one and later vex'd on the first rephlex tour of america in 2004 (i think?, don't remember), both coasts. they were pushing minimal techno, grime, sublow, and proto dubstep.

2005-2010 dub war with dq , joe nice, juakali. started in brooklyn in summer 2005. the first exclusively dubstep party in north america.

2006-2010 the trouble and bass crew with star eyes(syrup girls), drop the lime. pushing all kinds of sub related...from new rave/grime/dubstep..etc.

and you really gotta throw KJ up in there... i been playin the sounds there since early 2006, its more or less half dubstep every monday at this point, a bunch of one offs & colaborations, and KJ had alot to do with spawning the darkroom & headspace/metropolis etc etc camps... not to mention liondub who right now has a #1 release on juno :D

oh and cant really talk about grime in nyc to much before you mention matt shadetek & the dutty artz fam

its all one big strange dysfunctional loving family really lol.. but its def like 4 maybe even 5 different "scenes"

lol its def all love tho with philly & baltimore & everywhere NE & east coast lol, like i said my biased opinion was what i put earlier 8)
