Beginner dubstep and filth tunes for a US crowd
Beginner dubstep and filth tunes for a US crowd
As a DJ in the United States, I hardly ever get a chance to play dubstep out at a live gig. I slipped a few melodic and upbeat dubbers near the end of one of my sets, and the response was great. Now I've got a full on dubstep gig lined up, but am a bit nervous since dubstep is still mostly unknown here.
It seems that people here are more responsive to the melodic and filth tunes that dubstep veterans likely hate: Doctor P - Sweet Shop, Woo Boost (Subskrpt remix), etc.
The gig is upbeat, and I've been told to avoid the super dark tunes. What do you recommend playing for a crowd unfamiliar with the genre (and who will have no idea how to dance to it)?

That's true. I am a bit out of my league. I listen to dubstep mostly by myself, and usually stick to the darker stuff. Just looking for any tips on beginner tunes to introduce a crowd that has never heard the genre.prisoner wrote:if you need to ask you shouldn't be playing it.
Thanks for the advice -boring!
On a positive note: I've got a MASSIVE subwoofer lined up for this show. Looking to blow wigs off. People will either go crazy, or go away.
Re: Beginner dubstep and filth tunes for a US crowd
where are you from? No one knows dubstep? It's HUGE in the US!

Did you pick up Loefah - Just A Beat when he gave it away? If so sneak it into the set, go onajcronk wrote:That's true. I am a bit out of my league. I recommend Starkey (Ephemeral Exhibits) is pretty accessible from my experience; some Reso maybe; everyone can get down to Joker; some Nero remixes maybe.
Where exactly is "here", anyway?

Chicago, IL. There is a good electronic music scene, with an obvious focus on house.sofa_king wrote:Where exactly is "here", anyway?
Rusko played a big show here with Major Lazer, but beyond that there is very little wobble in the scene.
Re: Beginner dubstep and filth tunes for a US crowd
i regulary play for a non-dubstep crowd and i think these tracks works very well:
La roux - in for the kill (skreamix)
joker - do it
orien - satisfaction remix
caper - hybrid
darkstar - need you
emalkay - when i look at you
kid sister - pro nails (rusko remix)
the streets - blinded by the lights (nero remix)
klaxons - its not over (skreamix)
joy orbinson - hyph mngo
etc etc
try look at the response everytime you play a new a tune.. if you get a bad response then try play some mainstream house/reagge/techno uptempo and pitch it up to 140..and then switch back again afterwards. this works with prodigy - breathe or some other known track.
I hope that helps

You're not introducing them to anything, so I wouldn't worry about that.

Just because you are a character, does not mean you have character.

The US is so fukin lame, like im sorry but really, when i see videos of people DJing in the US, the crowd are just pathetic
mostly the bro types, with no idea how to skank or dance to the music, loads of odd girating movements
I just love how real and honest the UK is, people just come to raves to skank out in a dark room with a killer soundsystem. Proper underground style
Not tranna dis the US but, our scene makes me proud to be british! BIG UP POWAH AND THE DMZ MASSIVE!
