whenever i make a tune individual components of it sound good and then when i put them together the track seems dull, not in a sound/eq sort of way but a boring kind of "flat" rhythm way. there's no ebb and sway or pulse. what i mean is i can't boogy on down to my tunes, which is pretty key right?

even when i try to replicate other peoples' rhythms this still happens. what can i do to improve this? is it swing on the drums or am i emphasizing the wrong sounds, or the wrong place in the bar or what? too much going on?
thanks,
shuedet

Sounds like you're writing a drum part, then writing a bass part, and hoping that when they meet it'll sound good. You're not far off, but if you think of your bass (or at least the sub) as part of the drum kit, you might end up with a much more rhythmically convincing arrangement.

Also, try making some of your loops (esp kick drum and bass) more consistent and/or shorter - repetition is a tough thing to do perfectly, but it's one of the things that makes people lock into a groove.

also get a nice groove with your hi hat pattern to carry the highs along nicely i.e varying the velocity/volume of each hit to get a nice bounce
