Drone, Ambient, Synths & Noises.
Experimental music basically. Anyone else into this kind of thing?
I know one or two of you like to buy cassette so I trust you like this kind of stuff.
Anyway, some stuff to listen to:
http://www.myspace.com/mecheer - Cheer is Glasgow based. He's one dude and his acoustic guitar and he recreates this stuff live. Caught him supporting Grouper last year. Bought a few of his tapes 'cause this shit is lovely.
http://www.myspace.com/robedoor - Robedoor is pretty grizzly noise-laden psych/Drones of sorts. it's all really bleak. their LP Endlessly Blazing is fucking incredible.
A couple to start us off.

Not strictly drone and ambient but there's certainly elements of that as well as synths and noises.

Alva Noto and rater.noton are great for all the weird electronics stuff, likewise with my beloved 12k records <3
Re: Drone, Ambient, Synths & Noises.
Fennesz, Tim Hecker, Stars Of The Lid.
Re: Drone, Ambient, Synths & Noises.
loved Stars Of The Lid live. most beautiful stuff. i wish they'd get a leg on with this DVD of theirs. i feel like i've been waiting for years for it.
know what is well good? Fennesz and Sakamoto. oh, and new thing on the Fennesz front is this jazz band Food.
"Quiet Inlet reveals a technologised rhythmic approach distantly related to jungle and two-step as well as connections with 1970s Miles Davis recordings, such as Big Fun's Great Expectations and Recollections. Food's music is a magical hybrid of technology and improvisation, Europe and America, ambience and dance." - it actually sounds as good as this makes it out to be, don't sleep on it.
thread is now about experimental music in general?

If it's experimental music in general, I have to mention Nochexxx. Makes some of the best experimental hip hop around.

obsessed with underground tape culture myself, the experimental synth revival going on right now is blowing my mind
Re: Drone, Ambient, Synths & Noises.
Emeralds are pretty much my favourite band that do this kind of thing but thanks for bringing them to the thread!
oh, and http://www.myspace.com/pointnever
i think physical memory is maybe one of the best tracks i've heard in a long long long time.

personally not a huge fan of emeralds stuff proper, but I really dig some of the related side projects like "Outer Space"... and yeah, OPN is fucking amazing, actually what got me back into experimental circles after a hiatus of many years. Can't wait to score his new album...

Re: Drone, Ambient, Synths & Noises.
aye, buying Rifts on a whim was a choice idea. Rifts and Emeralds - What Happened were two of my '09 favourites without a doubt.
Deupree's 12k imprint was on the ball last year as well for the more polished sounding experimental electronics kinda stuff. Tomasz Bednarczyk - Let's Make Better Mistakes Tomorrow was a beautiful record and Giuseppe Ielasi, Lawrence English, Seaworthy, Pillowdiver (guitar drones but still awesome) and Solo Andata all put out great CDs too. best thing about 12k though? the fucking album art. those CDs all look so awesome.

Digitalis, Stunned, 905 tapes, NNA, OESB, Wagon, Deception Island... so so many awesome labels. All into the limited to <100 copies thing which is fun, but can be a curse as well.
Anybody into Skaters or James Ferraro stuff? Sam Meringue (Matrix Metals, Explorers, Wingdings, yoga, flashback repository etc etc) is also killing shit this past year.
One of the best things about this stuff is the hyptontic factor--- like Ferraro's tracks often go uninterrupted for like half a fucking hour, bleeps/bird squaks/jungle chanting/laser sounds on and on... gives you lots of time to burn your brain and trance the fuck out

Yeah man, Rifts was a game changer, prob my fave release of '09--- although my favorite tracks from that set are the ones from his 2007 tape betrayed in the octogontomm wrote:aye, buying Rifts on a whim was a choice idea. No doubt, and this goes for much of the tape culture as well, since most of these releases are home made, dudes get really creative about the packaging, you can tell it's really a labour of lovetomm wrote:best thing about 12k though? the fucking album art. those CDs all look so awesome.
Re: Drone, Ambient, Synths & Noises.
hah definitely. its that same part of my brain that goes off whenever i see white label w/ stamp. i see a nicely packaged cassette or CDr or 7" and i'm all over that shit.
i have some money i can essentially waste on shit i haven't heard yet. i might go shopping right now.

Re: Drone, Ambient, Synths & Noises.
Also, how rough is it trying to buy something you've missed? Like the Betrayed In The Octagon vinyl press is selling for £100>. it was worse collecting noise cassette and shit tbh. i've been trying to get the sodality - beyond unknown pleasures and the Cd alone sells for like £50. vinyl goes anywhere for £150 to £300 :'(
and people moan about DMZ costing ridiculous amounts.

Re: Drone, Ambient, Synths & Noises.
buy or die, then go broke and starve, at least you'll go out in style with fresh tunes.
Check out discriminate.com, they are in the states so you might be better off with a euro retailer, but the prices are great and the dude who runs the show is a really classy guy. Even with exchange/shipping/customs, you STILL might be better off, the prices from shops in the UK like Volcanic Tongue that import this stuff is ludicrous sometimes.
edit: that was supposed to be http://www.discriminatemusic.com/

Re: Drone, Ambient, Synths & Noises.
yeah, but most of the OOP stuff that is not oh-so-hot-right-now-OPN-OK-I-need-it-so-bad-I'll-sell-my-brother-to-white-slave-traders-so-I-can-afford-it can be found used for decent prices from heads in forums and whatnot. OPN, no, but a lot of the other stuff can be had for a song. The other cool thing is that 90% of the dudes making this stuff aren;t in it for the money (obviously, cause that would be a joke!), so they are more than happy to share it in mp3 or whatever--- even OPN basically said he didn't care if people booted his shit, his Upstairs label is all creative commons based and gives a go-ahead to share.tomm wrote:Also, how rough is it trying to buy something you've missed?
