Switching from Reason to Ableton Live
I did some searching and found some technical advice about rewiring reason into live, but the nature of my question is more theoretical i suppose.
I've been using reason 4 for about 5 or 6 months, starting to get a grip on the devices and general production techniques. However, i've been interested in Live for quite a while, mainly for the VST support, Audio looping/stretching, and i've been told the audio output in Live is superior to reason. So i'm pretty keen to incorporate Live into my workflow before i get too attached to reason.
So i guess my first step will be to rewire reason into live, keep making my sounds in reason, and start figuring out the live sequencer, reading and watching live tutorials, etc. My question is, if anyone has made the similiar software switch, what would be some advice to transfer my reason knowledge into live? How are the two programmes similiar? where do they fundamentally differ? any general tips that will help get me get up and running with the two programmes would be greatly appreciated.
thanks

Re: Switching from Reason to Ableton Live
Only tip I can give you is to read the manual of each DAW and you should be on your way
Re: Switching from Reason to Ableton Live
started with reason. then started using renoise. at first i rewired reason into renoise. then i stopped doing that because it was annoying when compared to just opening up a vst. so then i stopped using reason altogether for a while. then i started using a bit more again. then i got record. now i use reason and record or renoise. i find it refreshing to switch up the work environment from time to time. i don't rewire anymore. i either work in reason/record or renoise.
Re: Switching from Reason to Ableton Live
did you find rewiring at first helped bridge the gap between DAWs or just slowed you down?

I went from Reason to FL studio and then finally to Ableton, and I found it to be really user friendly. I would never go back. Just go through the manual and provided tutorials, or buy/download some basic tutorials and you will be more than on your way. Stick with the sequencer view for a more traditional production environment.
As far as rewire, it's only really useful if you want a particular sound out of a reason instrument. Other than that, it's a waste of time. Just go ahead and jump full on into Ableton and you should be comfortable with it in less than a month. Most of what you learn in any other DAW is fully applicable in Ableton. Once you learn the quirks it's smooth sailing.

i suppose i will just do a bunch of reading and just dive straight into ableton and only rewire if i have trouble making certain sounds. i've just gotten so addicted to producing lately i was fearing having a long period of time where i would not be able to get any ideas down. so i'll just start playing around with ableton while concurrently making tunes in reason until i feel i'm at the right point to make the jump.
thanks all for the responses

I am posting DZA's flower in this thread to hopefully lure him in here to tell you about his experience - he switched from Reason to Live a while back.

Re: Switching from Reason to Ableton Live
if you really like the reason synths then use rewire, there should be tutorial vids explaining how if you search. plenty of really good ableton tutorial vids out there too, tom cosm vids are a good start.

there are tons of ableton tutorial vids out there, it's a really well supported DAW in that respect.
Re: Switching from Reason to Ableton Live
Talk to Bazzle09 about it. He's moved for reason to ableton.
He's his AIM: baz1manor
Hit him up he should be able to help.

For me no. The only time I have rewired (which is a piece of piss with live) was to mix down old tunes that I did with Reason. imo the best way to learn live is to abandon reason for a while because you will probably use it as a crutch. Once you get comfortable then maybe incorporate reason again. I never felt the need to myself and my switch was pretty seemless once I put my mind to it. Had completed tunes in Live within months.
