Canada’s latest export J.me.J proves once again that thick skies and chilly weather are a fertile breeding ground for bass music pioneers. His latest release on Skanky Panky Records (UK) blew up the Addictech charts, and now Theoretic Records is pleased to present a new installation of fire from this young producer whose skills are not to be slept on.
With the release of Under Construction, Theoretic Records brings you a fresh take on glitch hop, a sound that everyone is hungry for but no one seems to be delivering. The two tracks ricochet off each other well, showcasing two distinct sides of J.me.J’s deep production talent along with his musical and technical versatility.
I Can Fly starts soothingly with the caress of a wandering piano before falling fast into a proper groove between big bass and perfectly distorted leads. Tightly designed and rich with jazzy shudders, warped howls and a funky crunch, I Can Fly massages different parts of your brain at the same time, stuttering at all the right places and gliding over the rest. Full of interesting ear fondles, the well-balanced track provides a rough edge with a delicate touch, giving it a deep sensuality rarely found in this realm of electronic music- and ensuring its success with the ladies.
An ominous intro foreshadows the frightening future in Under Construction, as alien samples noting a “critical error” will strike terror in the hearts of robots and technology-dependent humans alike. The space-metal mood cranks up and then turns right into the jam, throttling the listener on a trip through a cyborg battle that progresses using a multitude of musical layers: 3-D weight, silvery, sharp-edged bass and glitched out space shooters. J.me.J manages a giant slam of sound dusted with breather moments that will prove to be a slicing dance floor lover with its raw funk and high energy.
