Virtual DJ experience

Well basically i've been putting off learning to DJ for like a year now, had alot of clubs needing DJ's in the area and I've always been interested in starting, plus theres no money in low level production atm and probably ever again and i need a way to keep my coffers off empty.

I've been playing about my mates set up whose using http://www.virtualdj.com/ and a hardware controller and i think its a wicked way of getting out there playing and mixing tunes, plus I have a massive library of digital tunes, and don't have the space, time or money to burn hundreds of CD's or buy enough vinyls to get started especially as ive spent enough on mp3's as it is.

Just wondering if anyone has any thoughts on this way of DJ'ing or if any one uses or has used it and could give me some tips and help to get me started. also is it a viable way of playing out in clubs and not just on a system at home ?

ya might wana give yaself a coupla years practice before ya hit the clubs bro! by then you will realise why vdj would be a bad idea & you will have the skills to do a good job. theres more to being a dj than just changing songs!!chea

yeh yeh man i know, im not looking for a quick fix just a way to start dj'ing without having to buy a million vinyls and/or burning cds galore and i'd still be getting down the basics of DJ'ing, beat matching, finding good songs to mix and getting drops and shits down and all the other stuff id learn about dj'ing on the way, also why would you say vdj is a bad idea ? (just curious)

im pretty much just going on money, im not loaded and i just spent about 1500 on new studio gear so i havent got money to spend on everything else, i know i can get some decks and a mixer relatively cheap but then i have to get vinyls to actually play, and getting a fair few isn;t cheap.

Yeah i understand your query... Sorry i just hate virtual DJ but it sounds like it would be well suited for your purpose.

But if you ever want to get better at DJing then you eventually have to upgrade from that realm.

Fair enough, down to preference at end of the day but i appreciate your imput. In all fairness I do wanna get into 'proper' dj'ing at some point, always wanted to spin out some bangers on good ol' vinyls but i thought as a cheap starter i could learn the basics of actual dj'ing using what limited resources i have and the 3k+ dubstep and dnb tracks i've already brought/collected. but yh cheers for the replys so far

i use it. i just started learning to produce and DJ so i grabbed VDJ and i think its pretty decent for learning the basics. i went from having no idea how to mix a tune in time with another, or get nice transitions of basslines, but after watching this video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2Ulp6eGu2Uw , downloading the mixlab skin (you can get it from a link in the info on the vid) and practising for a bit i was on my way and now can create hour long mix's that are pretty much perfect. as for the sync button, yea its usefull but you dont need it.

ALL my mixes are done on Virtual DJ. I use version 4.6 with the vinyl interface, so you can even backspin the "records".

Just make sure you've got a decent soundcard, Native Instruments Audio2DJ is the best as far as I know....

I haven't had any probs with it at all, and I play in clubs regularly.. but as I say get a decent soundcard or it sounds shit. You can also route the audio output through cubase's drivers which is what I do. And don't play anything below a 320kbps MP3, obviously.

where did you guys learn? i mean i seen tuts all over the place and they just give a basic formula on specific stuff, would love to hear from personal experience

Not much you can teach dude. I just started playing songs at the same time... Learned on windows media one day when I realized I could open two of them, and that they had pitches... that exacelated into me n a friend modifying some walkman cd players and making our own peaudo-cdjs...

On beat, on bar. Thats all you have to learn. The rest, you have to PRACTICE.

90% of the dubstep tunes made are at the same tempo.. why would anyone need a sync button?

Can't believe no one else hasn't mentioned this, but Ableton is a great way to get more creative and still be able to use your mp3s It works with literally ANY MIDI interface available and allows you to do exercise your creativity to the nth degree

anyone know if its possible to put on internet radio shows with just virtual dj? cheers. i have seen an internet broadcast option on virtual dj but i am not sure if its capable of hooking up to a station like say dubstep.fm and play a show , as it gives u choice of server that can hold like 4 ppl max or something. anyone have any idea?
