Anime that's not corny?

Post by Jhonny2x4 » Fri Jul 02, 2010 11:26 am

I know that this is a nerdy post so no need to state the obvious.

Here's the thing, I was big on anime when I was a kid, but as I grew older alot of what I used to watch became corny in my eyes.

I barely watch it anymore because of this reason.

But lately I stumbled across one show called samurai champloo, and it's actually not half bad. It's not extremely corny and doesn't have a bunch of mythical stuff in it.

Ever since I saw this i'm starting to get interested again, but it's hard to find shows that are actually somewhat serious instead of shows that have nothing but kameamea beams flying out the peoples eyes.

The series I enjoyed so far are Cowboy Bebop, Samurai Champloo, and Paranoia agent (these are the series I watched later on, not when I was a kid).

I saw the ghost in the shell movie and the dubbing was fucking awful for the main character but the story was actually pretty intelligent and it talked a lot about different states of consciousness which I found interesting.

Does anyone know of some unique series or movies that I would probably enjoy based off the info I just gave you? Thanks.

Once again, yes I know i'm a nerd but I have respect for japanese art.

Champloo is great. You might like Afro Samurai if you like the setting of Champloo, really gorey and insane but funny as well.

Ghost in the Shell 2: Innocence is incredible if you haven't seen it, crazy plot, took me a few watches to completely get the whole thing
The Ghost in the Shell series are amazing also (Stand Alone Complex, 2nd GIG), not cheesy at all apart from the Tachikoma but they are no more annoying than Ed from Bebop (I get used to that shit after a while). Also, there's a Bebop movie if you haven't seen it (think it slots between eps 14 & 15 of the series)..

Tekkon Kinkreet is a great film also, not standard anime fair but it has great artwork and is quite inventive..

WATCHING ANIME DOES NOT MAKE YOU A NERD
(it makes you an otaku :D )

I had no clue ghost in the shell had a second movie, definitely have to check that out if it was as crazy as the first movies plot.

also yes I know about the boondocks (who doesn't?) but thanks for listing it anyways.

My friend has told me about ergo proxy but I have yet to check it out.

*Edit* just saw a few images of the show. It looks pretty sleek. Have to check this out as well.

Thanks everyone!

Anyone else have some good shows they'd like to suggest?

Loooooads of good recommendations in this thread (which noone ever seems to find but goes back a good few years and has a good cross section of opinion)
http://www.dubstepforum.com/the-anime-t ... e%20thread (bump it for more discussion as theres one of these 'recommend me some anime' threads every couple of months and they just get lost in the void)

Off the top of my head, elfen lied, natsume no yuujinchou, mushishi, voices from a distant star (hoshi no koe), 5cm per second (byousoku go senchi), the rurouni kenshin ova's, gankutsuou (!!!), baccano...i could go on.

Amazing thread! need to bookmark this. Goes to show that people have some good taste in anime.

Jesus christ, that's an intense film.

The Gundam series is worth a second look though, it's actually full of political intrigue and sheeit.
