Is signing to a label like losing your virginity?

Post by Danger Co » Mon Jul 05, 2010 7:15 pm

Hey, been loving dsf and thought it about time to start a thread (bit shy aww). Big respekt and hello to the forum :t:

Been producing for a while now and feel like it's possibly time to chase a label. But is it like losing your virginity (save it for someone special ) in the sense that if you hold out and refine, improve for longer it will be better for you in the long run? I plan on producing til I die!!

I'm just wondering the best way to go about it: Get on a net-label and build from there, wait and improve to approach the 'vinyl', labels or set up a website and give away my music (in exchange for contacts), build a database of fans etc and sell e.p/album etc on Beatport?

Would like to hear from artists who have been there esp, but any advise would be sweet. How did you do it? Any regrets either way?

in this world of singles, "you" rarely sign to a label as an exlcusive deal. more that you sign a tune, or a full release, to a label.

and no, it's not like losing your virginity-- unless I missed something.

I've never been signed but I didn't think there was any crying involved...

Yes its similar in these ways...

Its disappointing,
Doesn't last for long,
Involves a lot of sweat and effort.

and hopefully it wont be your last. There may be tears...
The first few are like practice runs, they do get better.

Im sorry i just cant help it. you fully walked into that one!

Sorry to hear your 1st wasn't all it was cracked up to be...

Yeah I did walk into it

But seriously though is it to an artists advantage to work as hard as you can and then arrive on the scene smoking hot or get started and learn as you go so to speak?

I'm just guessing in this day and age of music availability maybe the best approach is release yourself?

this is something i pondered recently.

i am far from the best person to ask, but my only thought is this

I would hate to approach a label/Be approached by a label (i wish  ) have something released, and then not be able to follow it up. i would need to reach a point where i was gettin not only quality but consistency in my productions.

If you go by your screen name, you won't be losing the virginity first.

you don't have to pay a hooker for your first release, and if all goes well you wont be ashamed of your finished product... so i'd say no

I hope it's not like losing my virginity. Uncomfortable and not at all pleasurable, afterwards feeling like an empty shell. I suppose it is kinda similar.

If it is like that just simply get the record label really drunk or spike their drink with rohypnol, then take that bitch home and fuck it until 12 inches of wax pop out. You can do that or trick the label into thinking you love each other then dump them after it gets fat after pumping out one of your singles.

But no seriously, don't send shit to labels unless you personally are happy with your work. They'll avoid you like the plague if you keep spamming.
