Prince Says The “Internet Is Over” And No Longer “Hip”.

Prince: 'The Internet Is Over'

Pop superstar PRINCE is adamant he will never sell his songs on the internet, insisting web-based outlets will soon disappear because they are no longer "hip".

The Purple Rain hitmaker has long battled to keep his music offline - in 2007 he sued video sharing website YouTube.com as well as eBay.com claiming they "are clearly able (to) filter porn and paedophile material but appear to choose not to filter out the unauthorised music and film content which is core to their business success."

Prince has also moved to ban fansites using images and anything linked to his likeness, while a home video of a child dancing to one of his songs on YouTube was pulled down in 2007 after the star's Universal Music Publishing claimed the recording infringed copyright.

The artist is still refusing to allow websites to sell his music and he's adamant fans will soon move on from the internet.

He says, "The internet's completely over. I don't see why I should give my new music to iTunes or anyone else. They won't pay me an advance for it and then they get angry when they can't get it.

"The internet's like MTV. At one time MTV was hip and suddenly it became outdated. Anyway, all these computers and digital gadgets are no good. They just fill your head with numbers and that can't be good for you."
Seriously?

In an age when everything is going online? Pretty strange concept.

Oh, thanks, sorry then. :)

I don't visit Secret Ninja Hideout, that's why I haven't seen it.

Still curious about fellow producers' point of view though. :)

prince can do whatever the fuck he wants, and will remain a millionaire for the next 20+years on international play of his 80's hits on adult contemporary radio.

Whether or not he has a point, his situation is essentially irrelevant for emerging artists.

Fair play to him :)

Dick. If he's seen a decline in sales it's because -

A) Everybody who does and ever will like his music will already have it, new fans will just borrow their parents CD's/Vinyl.
B) He's been a particularly well-hit target of illegal downloads!
Prince wrote:in 2007 he sued video sharing website YouTube.com as well as eBay.com claiming they "are clearly able (to) filter porn and paedophile material but appear to choose not to filter out the unauthorised music and film content which is core to their business success."
Absolute truth. The internet could do so much more to stop illegal file sharing and people wouldn't be able to do cock all about it. The only reason people download is because they can. I don't see how any law could protect people from posting up stuff that's supposed to be paid for :o If anybody does have some information on file sharing law PLEASE post it up because I want to read it badly and have never been able to find information that's completely non-jargon readable.

Prince no longer is going to have a diverse fan base, he's no longer 'hip' and has a niche market. Prince fans will follow Prince wherever he's going to sell music, but attracting new fans and having them follow his questionable distribution plans is a different story!

Hissy fit. Look who's used to getting paid stupid amounts of money by record deals that are no longer available

The internet blew up quite awhile back. Now it's in line to take over the entire world and turn us all into slaves. Pretty soon the internet will be connecting to us.

I think this sums Prince up pretty well.

There's a part 4 as well that's like 2 minutes long.

He's also a relic of a different era of music business, and the age of digital rights has not been kind to those old skool artists - there's less and less of a guarantee of anything for anybody, established or up-and-coming.

But this is myopic on his part, at best.

EDIT: Hey, JBE - thanks for sharing those Kevin Smith vids. Prince is even more batshit crazy than most people thought apparently. Nordstrom's boys' department... heh.

How?
Heavier moderation from ISP's. The internet should only be free to do what you like to some extent, law and order should be in place the same as the real world.

Problem is, that involves your ISP watching every second of your internet activity and handing over to the government. Not pleasant, and probably not legal depending on what country you live in. People will always find ways to bypass the latest prevention technology anyway.

As I'm in the UK I'm being watched on CCTV everywhere I go anyway, like I said... It wouldn't be different from real life! But yeh, I don't really do anything on the internet that I'm ashamed of anyway, I watch a bit of porn but that's all legal

You have the mind of a criminal.

when's the last time prince was even relevant?
seems like an attention whore gimmick to drum his career back up amongst hipsters, since despite the internet being dead the news sure is traveling quickly across it.
