Rotary Mixers
Rotary Mixers
I've heard that rotary mixers are great for long slow blends, but I really don't feel like shelling out the cash for something I start hating one or two tunes into a mix.
Anybody had experience with these?
If so, tell stories.

Re: Rotary Mixers
Yeah I've also been interested in one of these for time. Have no clue which ones are good and which ones are pap though, I don't think any of the usual brands make them do they?
Re: Rotary Mixers
Vestax makes a pretty shit one apparently, but I think there's a Gemini one for about 300 bucks that's supposed to be mad nice.bobby_dozen wrote:Yeah I've also been interested in one of these for time. The Bozak CMA-10-2DL is supposed to be butter-smooth.

And the UREI 1620 is apparently a close second.

Everything else seems to be judged to the standards of those two.

Re: Rotary Mixers
A lot of mixers you can replace the standard faders for rotary ones... might be good to check out if you want to try it

Re: Rotary Mixers
They don't suit my djing style, can't say that I care for them.
Make it hard to cut the volume quickly, or cut back and forth. If you really want knobs, why not adjust the gains?
That said, Pioneer DJM-800s amongst others offer kits to replace the faders with knobs.

Re: Rotary Mixers
It's mostly house and techno guys using these. Generally people who want an all-analogue signal chain, a certain sonic quality, etc. I think there's a rotary kit (or at least rotary version) for the Xone 92 but the better-known ones are probably the Urei 1620 and the Bozak something or other. There's a couple of guys making handmade rotary mixers now which look stunning, all very boutique and high end though.
Not really sure they'd be ideal for dubstep. The 1620 doesn't even have EQ!

Yeah, I'd be wanting one of these in addition to my friend's (ridiculously sick) Mackie mixer, in case we wanted to play a 4 hour b2b deep house session or some ridiculous shit.

Re: Rotary Mixers
I've spun on a 1620 a couple times and I own a custom rotary, as I don't cut that much they suit me pretty well (although, especially on older ones with looser pots, you can really whip the volume knob around fast if you try.. you'd be surprised). Not a mixer for all styles tho for sure. If you spin house, I think it's cool to spend some time on one and give it a shot.. More than anything a no-features rotary with good knobs like the ones above makes you really pay attention to the mix itself and just fully listen as you blend tracks in. Many (tho not all) rotaries are also setup so that you don't have the level split between a gain knob and a channel knob or slider, which is not fun to deal with at first but after you get used to really putting your ears into your mix it feels really really cool imo. There is def a cult of worship for the vintage models that I think is a little excessive, but there's really some cool stuff about mixing on em that I think is worth checkin out. I've grown to quite like mixing on knobs although you do really have to get used to it and pay attention to what you're doing.
Plus most of these things sound amazing and it's fun to hear your tracks and blends soundin all clear. They get godawful expensive though for what you get.

Re: Rotary Mixers
Just bought the rotary version of this.

That being said, I need a soundcard now. Anybody know where I can get a cheap one?

Re: Rotary Mixers
That's my mixer, hello old friend! Be warned, the build quality is a bit dodgy

Had one of these for a few years. Didn't realise they done a rotary version. Where was that from or is it custom made?Helix [Delay] wrote:Just bought the rotary version of this.

Re: Rotary Mixers
I've used one a couple of times, takes a bit of getting used to. They're good if you blend a lot, not so good for quick mixing
Re: Rotary Mixers
how are they for scratching?

Re: Rotary Mixers
I love rotary mixers, but they can indeed be hard to familiarize with and really only good for long transitions. If you're djing dance music, regardless of genre, and not scratching, why wouldn't you go for long transitions? I DJ dubstep the same way I DJ techno.
I have that same vestax mixer but with faders like pictured above. Its a great mixer for its age, but I really would like to get a Urei. Love that analog sound...no replacing it.
