European Countries Banning the Burka

Post by cb8051 » Wed Jul 14, 2010 8:36 am

A long standing topic of discussion, all over the news this morning announcing French MPs vote to ban the wearing of the full veil in public, along with the recent law passed in Belgium to ban the burka.

There are talks of recent surveys made in the UK indicating around 95% of people support a ban of wearing the full veil in public, backed by Conservative MP Philip Hollobone.

In my opinion I feel that there should be some form of legislation in place regarding the wearing of the full veil in public.

Other opinions please.

I don't think they should be banned. It should be illegal to cover your face in shops, or banks etc but I don't see what harm it causes just mooching around with a burka on.

Seems like it would be difficult to put into law. Would it exclude all headwear that covers the face? I'm sure an entrepreneurial type could exploit this by designing an appropriate garment that covers the head within the law as it is defined.

It would be hugely difficult to put into law and to enforce.

I think that is the way it should be approached, I don't agree with an all out ban, like someone knocking about in the park in a burka, but more sensitive areas such as banks, rail stations, airports, etc., should be able to enforce some kind of rule.

Do you disagree with a ban of the full veil in areas requiring a higher level of security such as those stated above?

I can't run around wearing a mask in public.
There's plenty of other styles of muslim headwear.

Also, it's the 21st century. Islam should try adapting to it.

women who wear it do so because they're scared or because they've been brainwashed into thinking it's a good idea by a medieval misogynistic religion which obviously isn't real. i'd vote for anything banning religious cunttery

In Golders Green women wear wigs and long skirts. I get tired of people saying Islam in particular is misogynistic or 'medieval' - particularly the medieval bit, so many people seem convinced that if you live in the middle east you must be some kind of savage. Ever heard of orientalism?

they should ban them because they look awful, the outfit does no favours for the figure, you need to accessorise sister! Some big sunnies and this cute "dirty minx" necklace would be fab.

If it's misogynistic, it's misogynistic.

Sure. I'm just not convinced that a ban is somehow empowering women. Every war monger is also a feminist when it can justify invading Afghanistan or Iraq. Do you have any idea how many women are raped by soldiers in the Congo? Or how about our sex industry? Britain's Next Top Model? Also: not all Muslim women are oppressed. Perhaps if you met some of the people in the Free Palestine group in my uni you'd be surprised.

I've always dreamt of wearing a Burka and going places talking in a gruff builders accent.
