NI Massive Tutorial - Hendrix meets the Monkey

Post by chewie » Tue Jul 20, 2010 1:12 am

Alright new tutorial and i bet your wondering wtf the titles all about.
Basically we're going to create something a little different here using a scream filter and the freq shift effect amongst other things. Here's a little demo of what were going to make starting low down on the keys (you'll see what i mean by the weird ass title) then going higher up into something that sounds more like a demented hawk.

SCREAM MAIN.mp3

Alright pretty fuckin nuts

Now start off with the default patch in massive. This patch is just one oscillator (believe it or not) a saw wave tuned to -24

Image

Couple of simple things first.
Add some vibrato manually in the OSC tab

Image

Change the synth to monophonic and pan position to mono

Image

Now the raw sound is sorted onto the filter.
The scream filter's up first and i was wanting a sort filter cut off sweep starting from low to hi. I did this with an envelope controlling both filter cut off/scream parameters. The filter also self-oscillates in a very horrid way completely changing the sound fed into it, even with small amounts of resonance.

Image

Now the envelope i set up so it comes in a bit quicker than linear by getting rid of the attack phase (by reducing the attack gain and time to 0) and using the decay parameter to create a convex attack like this :

Image

I've also done the same with the amp envelope which is env 4 but with a faster decay so the volume comes up a bit quicker than the filter sweep and less release ( but still enough to give it a verb style sound):

Image

Here's what it sounds like so far:

1. SCREAM filter 1.mp3

Pretty tinny so i send this in series to a bandpass filter which will accent the sweet spot:

Image

now sounds like this:

2. SCREAM both filters.mp3

Was tinny now a little thin so some FXs to beef this up a bit.
First is the classic tube with drive and mix up to about 50/50, then the old dimension expander:

Image

The frequency shifter effect is going to add that resampling sort of detuned effect you get as the key played goes up by having the mix @ 50/50 and the pitch set slightly off the 12 0'clock position (shift and drag helps here to find a nice amount).
You can also stick a slow lfo controlling pitch with a very small range to create some interesting movement.

This is routed to the output of the scream filter in INS 1 and the parabolic shaper INS 2 is going to mash all the signal after the filters.

Image

routing looks like this

Image

and now sounds like this

3. SCREAM all FX.mp3

hehe I may need that as mine came out a bit different, slight variations seem to cause big sound changes, but that's great cuz I came up with about 4 different sounds I like and 1 that is madder than a box of frogs. I can't upload tho as music PC is not online, mebbe will do tomorrow when i can find my damn USB stick.

Thanks again chewie, really good shit man

Yeah man the cut off/scream/freq shift pitch parameters can make the sound way different with even small amount of change, try adding velocity or after touch (if your keyboard supports it) to some of those parameters using the yellow boxes in the macro control bottom left for some extra randomness. And post up some clips for the sample crew when you get the chance ;)
