Utility effect and mono in Ableton?

Post by krispy » Thu Jul 22, 2010 1:50 pm

What does the "Utility" effect do in Ableton? Is this what you would use to make sounds MONO by decreasing the stereo width to 0%?

Also, what techniques to other people use to make sounds mono in ABleton?

Pretty much this, yeah. Use it to invert phase, swap LR, pass only L or R, sum to mono, widen to 200% (bear in mind that L and R will be out of phase and you need to invert the phase on one of the sides to get the pure mono side signal), add/remove gain, etc. It's a pretty boring plugin, but one of the ones I use most. Great for keeping your levels in check throughout the fx chain.

I also recommend using the Utility Plug for automating volume in Ableton instead of the automating the channel volume.

This way you can adjust the entire/overall channel volume while still keeping your volume automation in place.

I use a similar native plugin in logic to do the exact same thing. top tip!

yeah cheers for that handy lil tip :D. You can use it to grab accapellas too if you have the instrumental track...handy for remixing.

THAT is a very good idea my friend

i tend to not use certain effects when dont really have any uses for them, but the collection i use grows from day to day because i discover more about them etc.
and everyone uses everything differently etc

can we do this? probably the best idea for a thread ever, theres so much in ableton that i dont know how to use as well as i should, and its hard to get started on some things by just messing around.

ill start it and maintain the first post of each thread if the silkpantsman or HALP dont want to? dont wanna jump on your idea but it really needs to happen!
