Help Me Sound More Pro

Post by recession proof » Wed Jul 28, 2010 4:21 pm

So Im still a noob when it comes to producing. I use ableton, some NI plug ins, and Albino 3. Below is a link to the second song I made and some of my other stuff. The problem is that my sound doesn't sound as punchy and crisp as the pros. I can't really pinpoint why. Do I need to layer my sounds? Do better synthesize job with my plug ins? Use more effects? Will getting the track mastered solve everything? Im lost. Also all my songs sound so so on speakers and headphones, but terrible in a car stereo. Is their anything I can do using ableton to solve this issue or is this in the realm of professional mastering. Pretty much do you have any tips for a starting producer to get his sound to sound more punchy and crisp like the pros?

thanks.

here are the best tips imo:

sample choice: always use hi quality samples

eq's:if you choose your samples wisely you don't have to eq like an idiot

pannen:when I started producing I never panned my sounds, panning can have a big impact on your overal mix

compressing:almost every dance music style has compressed drums: read read and read like an idiot for compression techniques

dont push your sub bass too the max, keep it under your drums in terms of db
take care of any unnecessary frequencies in your mix

if you layer sounds, pick your sounds carefully example:

a snare with lots of thumb for the mid
a clap for some slap and a cool sound with a tail and lots of high frequencies for air
and then you don't have to eq that much

some tips given to me from other producers when I was just starting;)
