tune battles, name-calling, and waste posts...

Post by Sharmaji » Thu Jul 29, 2010 4:52 pm

Maybe it's the summer heat getting everyone's aggro on, i dunno.

on the plate for discussion:

1. tune battles. I'm always a fan of healthy competition, yes, even in creative aspects-- it makes you reach further than you're used to, which is a good thing. So i'll be more than happy to keep these up. DON'T, however, devolve into name-calling. Calling someone a 'pussy' on the internet makes YOU look pathetic and cheapens the quality of this board. I've said it before and i'll say it again: don't fuck up DSF.

2. name-calling. Starting a thread with someone's name as the title and 'you're a wasteman' as your post is, again, pathetic. This is a production forum, not a friendship-counselor site. You have personal beef? settle it either in person, via email, on IM. If it's something that comes up in a previous thread, fine-- make your point in that thread.

3. waste posts and posting : basically, if you don't have anything to say, DON'T SAY ANYTHING. The # of posts and threads we have that end with something "but i've never tried it so I don't know" or "that's what i heard"... folks, conjecture and hearsay don't help anyone. That bullshit moxxie post on mastering is clear proof.

3.5 if you "can't be arsed" to read a long thread, you don't get to post about it.

otherwise, glad to see the huge # of tunes being posted for feedback ,the active Q&A w/ the Widdler (and others on deck), and the extremely-interesting discussion on headroom-- keep the good stuff coming.

#3/3.5 is one not many people pay attention to.
People read half of the OP and then prematurely ejaculate their opinion on something vaguely related. When if they had read down the page a bit they would have realized that someone has already answered the question, the OP has clarified their question, or the the question is actually about something they don't even know about. -r-

3.5 is a massive pet hate of mine, especially when it comes to the feedback threads *hangs head in shame* I really should learn to just ignore people that don't read the rules and hope everyone else does the same.

Yeah, I've not been here long but it's a pain seeing those very useful and productive threads cluttered up by folks that wanna take but not give.
How many reports does it take to get rid of a post? Surely if we were just vigilant about doing that it'd keep things some what tidier.

I don't mind a little derailment every now and again. If this place gets too serious or overmoderated then I am going to be less interested in reading this forum. Good just for the most part sharm just saying.

I think the tune battle is popular because it's only two people. It's the DSF equivalent of watching a boxing match instead of voting in a raffle.

Been an active member of many and varied forums over the years, from a political debate forum to a heavy metal forum, even the Eve online forum. The one constant in them all is the amount of *shitpoasting* that needs keeping in check. You guys are doing a pretty good job of that here despite the lack of draconian rules you get on some forums.
Opinions are like a$$holes, everybody's got one and they're mostly full of S***

saying certain posts are irrelevant to a thread, or redundant is a little pig headed imo.
this may be an unpopular opinion, but this is an internet forum where people come to participate, voice their opinions and learn from each other.
just because you find a particular post to be invalid or useless does not mean it won't explain something to 10 other people in a way that they understand.
i realize there are limits to this idea, but i've been on forums that were way worse than this, and i think this is a little excessive, just let people post what they'd like, and if you feel it is worthy of flaming them, then do it.
premature ejaculation of opinions is what makes a forum interesting, not a mindless boring zombie of a board.

Well-thought-out, well-articulated opinions make it even more so, and much more pleasing to read. Obviously people are allowed to have their own opinions and post them here but if it's something like "I think I remember Rusko using something to make something like that I think... can't remember though, dunno" it literally is quite useless to anyone and just serves as a scroll wheel excercise.

Some people write such bullshit incomprehensible run-on sentence posts and then wonder why no one answers their questions or pays attention to them. If they had just taken the extra few seconds before they reached for their crack pipe and reread what they typed from an outsider's position it would be obvious that they were making no sense.

It's like a kid with tourettes shouting out swearwords at your grandmother's birthday luncheon. Sure from a certain point of view you could classify it as making things more interesting but in terms of functionality it does get in the way when you're trying to have a proper discussion about something.

I think this is the kind of thing Sharmaji's on about here, not something like "I don't think what you have to say is important because I disagree"
