This subforum is completely []necessary

Post by dq » Fri Jul 30, 2010 2:46 pm

90% of the dubstep I'm feeling lately is stuck in here. To bok bok's point, it's not really accurate to call most of it house (like Girl Unit, for example), and it unnecessarily segregates much of the worthwhile music that keeps dubstep from becoming a complete joke into its own niche.

End apartheid. Tear down this wall. Etc etc.

edit: changed thread title. i'm sold!

can't actually see any threads on this page that you could classify as dubstep at all, except girl unit one

I do think it's about time we moved off DSF tbh... doesnt need to be called anything special like FUTURE BASS GARAGE HOUSE STEP.

But a Dubstep->House forum this is not really.

I love house as well, and would definitely not discourage people from talking about, listening to, evangelizing about it. My point isn't about house. My point is that Joy Orbison, Ikonika, Actress, Brackles, Night Slugs, Lone, Machinedrum (that's just from a quick scan down the active threads) are among the people who are actually making decent dubstep, and this forum is dominated by discussion of those sorts of artists. It's a shame that the "dubstep" part of the "dubstepforum" isn't where I would go to discuss what I consider the best parts of current dubstep. Don't know what I'm trying to save about dubstep really, except for I remember it being something that included all sorts of sounds and ideas and was much better off for its diversity.

the brackles threads are two (pretty much) house mixes
the joy orbison thread is a disco mix
the ikonika thread is about her house label

My problem with it is people go WELL EVERYTHINGS HOUSE AT THE END OF THE DAY.

By the same token everythings Disco.

And by the same token everything is just vibrations.

So why arn't we on vibrationforum.com?

Because this is generally not HOUSE MUSIC IN GENERAL but more house/techy/garagey/generally not shit offshoots of the world that Dubstep came from, hence it's a subforum on here.

Is it helpful to Dubstep fans to see a House forum under Dubstep? no it's very confusing House is ten times bigger than Dubstep

Is it helpful for lots of good wierd dubstep and funky and "tropical" stuff to be in a House forum either, not really?

Time to cut the apron strings I think!

I'd also still argue heavily that all this "House" being made by lots of the guys on here isn't house at all.

Especially all this 130 half step stuff, just sounds like old dubstep, nothing wrong with that, much the opposite..

but to suddenly say I AM HOUSE is pretty patronising to a very old and very huge movement of music which this forum covers about 1% of.

the majority of stuff posted here is house based (funky/tropical/130/deep/tech)
and a fair bit of garage, but mostly house

why change anything?

i'd sooner not trawl through threads about everyone from dmz, skream etc over to trolley snatcha looking for stuff about, say, deep teknologi (and for the record i still support and purchase dubstep releases such as the new quest etc)
i'm not sure i've ever percieved someone like Actress for instance as a dubstep artist.
this forum helps group things together that dont have the obvious hallmarks of dubstep ie 140 bpm etc
works ok for me

though i agree the dubstep stuff shouldn't be posted here

(from the redinho thread)

i can definitely sympathize with this point of view. rather than getting too caught up in what word is used to define it, it is at least true that this is at least a place to talk about interesting music without all the pointless noise. i'm just noticing a trend of people often having to put a disclaimer before their posts about how "this isn't really house, but..."

so i guess the thread title is a bit too harsh, but hopefully people understand the underlying source of the frustration.

anyway, nothing but love for house music. house in nyc outdoors in the summertime is what it's all about!

Oh I've gotta weigh into this one - HOUSE for me is just a disguise that stops us getting bogged down by labels, nothing more nothing less - keep the confusion and the fluidity of such a banal label...its working for us

dubstep is garage based, making it house, so why don't we talk about dubstep on here?

I dunno man, I just think we should get our own forum instead of being the stangely titled sub forum of an otherwise dying forum

I know we are mostly DSF heads so it's hard to leave, but it makes more sense to make a forum... even it's not got a genre name, just so we can differentiate and move away from the corpse of dubstep

And all this half step juke is as house as Dubstep....

Go to any decent record store and look through the many different styles with the suffix 'House'.
This forum represents the majority 115-130.

Still, I suppose we havent had a ''Change the forum name'' debate for a couple of weeks though.

But stuff you and I (for example make) is something 140 bpm and is not really House music...

I defo don't make House music, but I post my music in here.

MY POINT: why re label to something retro? Why not just leave it nameless and let someone else deciede and get on with the music.

yeah but comparing dubstep and house isn't the same as comparing garage and house, as the latter are much more closely connected
i don't know if there's a need for a whole new forum, yet anyway
i would join if there was though lol
