different time sigs... ie 6/8
so I recently started a track in 6/8...
after the initial adjustment, I have to say that the drums sound so tribal & different!
I think im guna start producing alot more in the time signature.
I want to hear about your experiments etc,
the only other timing i have played with (other than 4/4) is 5/4, all I can say is...
GANGSTAAAA!

Put the kick here, put the snare there. Sounds coo'? Ok, coo'.
I really wouldn't worry about time signatures. Like, half my shit is in odd time signatures and it's not uncommon for me have more than 3 in one song, secondly, it's even more common for me to not even know what time signature I'm writing in; I don't bother to count. I'll even do the polyrhythm here and there if I feel like it. Similarly, it's not uncommon for me to do nothing but 4/4.

the reason I started using 6/8 was so I could get some triplet action going on!

all about time signatures! i do it a whole lot
this starts in 7/4, then in 5/4, then back to 7

i love the alien feel you can get with them, people complain (especially with odd times) that it sounds too broken, but either that can be quite a nice effect, or the kick and snare placement needs to be moved around. With good enough placement, people won't be able to tell it's not in 4/4- I've heard mixes with my 7/4 stuff in it that I can tell the DJ was totally unprepared for the missing beat and fluffs it a little
nothing wrong with straight 4/4 either though. all about exploring all of those different feels. mix it up bruv
still wanna hear your stuff Genevieve

Re: different time sigs... ie 6/8
I love writing in other time signatures but I havn't for aaaaages because I'm trying to make stuff I can DJ with and I cannae cope with other time sigs cos I am a shite DJ XD
Re: different time sigs... ie 6/8
just dive in headfirst man. I used to write tracks deliberately that went from 4/4 to 7/4 and 7/4 back to 4/4 so I could consciously think "right, i wanna drop some 7/4 shit, I'll need to mix this changeup track in first..."paravrais wrote:I love writing in other time signatures but I havn't for aaaaages because I'm trying to make stuff I can DJ with and I cannae cope with other time sigs cos I am a shite DJ XD
then i did a dj set for my mates while on a lot of acid, and in between watching my ableton tracks fly out of the screen and wander around the room, i worked out that you can do some pretty cool mixes between different time signatures with a bit of clever eqing and some delays. Now I just write whatever I feel like, and I still manage to drop pretty much what I want to

You and me both. o.o I lost most of my crap a long time ago because my pc failed so now I'm on a cheapo laptop that can BARELY handle production. Last tune I completed like a month or so ago, but that one I only showed to two people (sort of a violent odd time signature speedcore/breakcore/black metal tune), one of them being Feral Witchchild from this forum. I'll keep it like that because that tune is really personal.Hurtdeer wrote:still wanna hear your stuff Genevieve
Currently working on some breakcore/ragga Amen mashing stuff, which if I do my bouncing right, my computer can handle. o.o

Re: different time sigs... ie 6/8
Sweet topic and sweet track Hurtdeer!
I haven't made anything in an odd time in a while, really should get back to it. I've got some guitar tracks in 11 or 7 written out somewhere that I should record and turn into a full song. Big on polyrhythms and breaking stuff down into little groups of 2 and 3.
Ahh now I feel the need to go produce something uber progressive!

I'm writing a song that seems to have 3 different time signatures, if not more. (7/4, 3/4, and 4/4 that I have know of) Is it a sin to switch directly from one to another? If not, anybody have insight on how I do so effectively?

Re: different time sigs... ie 6/8
Just do what sounds good. Though you can do polyrhythms, keep, for example, the melody in 7/4 and make the drums 4/4. If you have 4/4 drums going 7 times and 7/4 melodies going 4 times, they'll end at the same spot and you can go from there.Infinite BC wrote:I'm writing a song that seems to have 3 different time signatures, if not more.
