what would you guys like an in depth tutorial on?
figured while i'm job hunting and not working on tunes rather than just wait for questions to pop up to answer or just waste time while i'm by my pc and have it running background tasks that make production not possible i could do something productive. so what do the users of dsf want to know about, or think needs a rolling q&a thread. if it's something i don't know about in depth or if someone else wants to help answer that'd be great too. also try to keep it a general question and not daw specific (specific techniques for the daws can be added later, but i'm hoping this can be more general knowledge with wide applicability)
it could be potential for updating the production bible, and possibly we could successfully start a production wiki like doa tried with the dnbwiki, but actually keep it updated.
food for thought.
so shoot out some ideas and a poll can be added as they come up.

also maybe we can come up with some sort of thread tag for the bigger threads that will make them more search friendly
(once again taking a cue from a bud on doa, he would add the text muttleymarked in threads he would start so phpbb search would pull them up easier)
perhaps we could agree on something like this to circumvent the poor search feature on here until each individual board is indexed by google (shot that info to dave to pass up the chain, but that would allow for a board by board capable custom search)

that just comes with time, knowledge, experimenting, talent and not listening to dubstep 24/7 or as you influence for productionRightOnTime27 wrote:how to take the "new producer cheese" off my tunes.

Oh and I like your idea about keywording useful posts...
Rules : you cant keyowrd your own post... someone has to do that for you...
to keyowrd a post, you type midgetporn and hit submit? Figure thats a keyword we shouldnt have (too) many instances of on dsf... then again who knows what thier doing in the hideout these days.

there's loads i don't use in my dubstep or just general production/recording questions people are unsure about however basic it may be. and by no means if anyone wants to join in on this idea, shit feel free.Basic A wrote:Reece modulation?

well i had a thought it could be something ridiculous and the mods could add it to a wordfilter and grant access to themselves or whom they see fit and maybe at the beginning of each month a thread suggesting what should be tagged from the past month, then a vote on what should be addedOh and I like your idea about keywording useful posts...

I like the wordfilter idea, just keep it with the mods and a select lot (i nominate you depone and legend, you guys have level heads and wouldnt tag anything stupid)
IDK if the voting thread would be managable though would it? That'd require alot of bookmarking/participation from the community, and i mean, if searchings already too hard... well... do the math

your right honestly, itd be cool to get a bit of a breakdown on recording and treating tracks for organic/rock bands... I know this is a pretty specialized area of production, but, its one of the few chances we have as producers to make cash for our work, and its also such a different realm then edm... could cover everything from mic placement and room acoustics to limiting and compressing real drums...deadly habit wrote:there's loads i don't use in my dubstep or just general production/recording questions people are unsure about however basic it may be. and by no means if anyone wants to join in on this idea, shit feel free.

-I'm always up for following a bass tutorial.. anything from a nice deep bass to mid range wobz
-unusual sounds to mix in with bass lines to spice them up
-an indepth tutorial on high hats.. how to get different sounds, eqing them, what tech goes with what style, tuning, layering
..just some ideas!

Re: what would you guys like an in depth tutorial on?
creative sound modulation?
alternative uses for compression?
recreating analogue sound feel and imperfections via a digital processing... (or cheap analog gear solutions)
Using and manipulating vocal samples
that's kinda the idea for threads i'm aim for, more broad application than honing in on specifics

Re: what would you guys like an in depth tutorial on?
i think there needs to be a in depth tutorial on workflow...more specifically...how to layout a track once you have all the sounds you`re gonna use ready to go....making things gel properly. i find myself stuck a lot of times once i lay my drums out......i have a nice sounding bass patch going for example....but it just seems uninteresting when laying out a pattern like there is still something missing.....a tutorial on workflow, and bringing a track to life would be helpful.

noob poster speaks wise words
i like the idea of that one.
also, on other forums, ive seen important and helpful posts which are tagged [FAQ]
not in the title, but directly next to it, and theres the option to only show the tagged
threads, making it so much easier to browse through the really helpful information.

To a certain extent, I think the whole workflow thing comes with experience and I can imagine it varies from one person to the next. That said I have massive problems when it comes to it though so I 3rd the idea... and actualy concentrating is a nightmare for me. Prehaps a strict diet regime with a tut. on leafy greens would be worthwhile, to..?
