Monitor/Room advice (First Post)

Post by viberous » Tue Aug 10, 2010 6:44 pm

Whats good everybody! I've been a lurker here for quite some time and had a question about rooms, bass, and monitors. I'm looking to buy some krk rokits (really like their sound), but the rp5s were definitely lacking in the lower end of things when I tried them at the Guitar Center. From what I've been reading from other posts getting a sub would take care of the lower end of things, but my dorm room is the stereotypical cement white walls and I have a feeling a sub would be straight up overkilll for monitoring :u: So, I was wondering what you guys thought about getting the 6s or the 8s? Would the 8s also be overkill? Also, I have a set of hi-fi logitech z-2300 speakers so if I felt the lower end of my mix was non existent could i switch over to the logitech for the low end?
Sorry if these seem like silly questions, just trying to expand the ole sound cranium :e:
Thanks!

6's should be enough, especially for a smaller room.

i expect even the 5's would of done once you got them home, hard to tell from listening in a store unles they had like a special demo room or somthing.

I've got 8s. I chose them cause when i went to the guitar centre and had a listen I couldn't go without that extra lowness.

+1

For the most part, small speakers (at the same price point) don't go as low. Not much you can do about that – it's nothing to do with what room you're in.

smaller room your is, the more bass can affect what your hearing due to reflection off the walls all over the place.

if you have a small room, go for the 5/6 and then have some decent headphones for doing the bass. (senneheisers, beyerdynamics or akgs are all highly recommended)

Also, i believe i read it on 'the grid' over at dogs on acid, that if you intend to buy a sub, you need to budget twice its value for room treatment, as if you thought the standing waves from 8s were a problem in a small room, a sub is alot worse... Makes it very hard to get flat bass that is at a correct level for the rest of your sound.

Dude if your rooms cement walled Id invest in some treatment regardless, combing and buildup must be a bitch regardless of what speakers you use.

Ya, now that I remember correctly even djing parties in similar rooms at school the bass on my logitechs was all the way down and everyone was still saying there was too much bass. My budget is around $500 so I'm leaning towards the 6s and that leaves $100 for treatment (or killing my liver :v: ). Any recommendations on basic treatment...would some tapestries work?

Thanks for all the responses so far and those gearslutz links!

if you're in a dorm i wouldn't invest jack shit in anything other than cheap beer and taco bell.

6's will probably give you more joy in the long run. couple either with a decent pair of headphones. save the sub for (much, much, much) later.
