Eastern Vocal Samples

Hi, does anyone know any good sample sources for Eastern vocals (don't know the name of the style of music, which is probably why I'm failing)

I've been looking on and off for the last year or so and never had any luck but I really need to get this one locked down I think,

In return I have about 15-20 metroid prime samples that I ripped the other day All labelled and bounced @ -18 dbfs

my friend, if quality 'eastern vocals' are what you want..

start listening to lots of arabic and hindu music.. bollywood's good.. so are muslim prayers if sung well.. just listen to lots of it and i guarantee you will find something good worth sampling.. look for field recordings too.. yes.. shaabi music is good as well

the call to prayer/azaan gets used loads and isn't a sufi thing. arabic can generally sound pretty good no matter what shit they're on about.

yep i think you have to search a lot by yourself to find what pleases you and is original also. I often use this kind of sample, but they are from many different sources: films, original traditionnal songs, dailymotion, field recordings, ...
The best would be to record someone doing it (i don't know, meet some traditional people).
Otherwise do your own samples with what you're able to find

i could record some islamic prayers n shit like that but i don't have a recording setup atm.

a good alternative that's just come to mind though, check about and i'm sure it's pretty easy to get either online or downloadable versions of the qu'ran that have a function where you can set it to read itself. so you get a traditional recording of the voice and a fair amount of that type of sample to choose from.

I have found a lot of their tunes on amazon for $1 / mp3

Besides, using that kind of samples if you can't be bothered listening to traditional music is also extremely lame.

In short NO.

Muslims do not like any type of iconography (hence no pictures in their mosques only patterns) and sampling prayers is a big no-no in certain muslim sects.

Examples - Brian Eno and David Byrne made "My life in the bush of ghosts" one track sampled a call to prayer - the shitstorm that ensued meant that the reissue had to drop the track entirely. Which is a shame cos its ace.

Also Playstation used a Mali singer for LBP - now in Mali its fine to sing verses from the scriptures but not so in other places.
Sony had to recall hundreds of thousands of discs and then re-edit the sound with 2 weeks to go before release.

Of course a random Dubstep banger probably wont attract attention but if it does it can get messy.
And while you could say who cares what they believe etc remember its important to some believers so why irritate them?
... choose another sample - preferably one which means something to you and you might even understand.

@Daft tnuc: interesting point. Personally, i listen to many different traditional musics. I find them richer and more meaningful than most of the music we create nowadays. It's like they build complex sound architecture and philosophy (through codes or themes variations), but their executions can be really minimalistic and are felt as pure or real as can be human feelings or nature.
Now, the colors it gives to modern sounds is one thing, knowing how to mix or interact with is another.

freedom to sample things is something i hold dear and it's actually a tangible reality unlike their made up rules so in other words....fuck them and their law.

noone owes me a living, but respecting nonsensical ideas isn't something i do. everyone is happy to laugh at someone that thinks the earth is flat, what makes belief in imaginary creators any different?

o and generally i don't sample. still though should artists get paid just cos you used a third of a second of their track? and just in case you think i'm being hypocritical i release my tracks under a creative commons license.

hmm... i've used prayer before in sets/songs.. for one i think it sounds beautiful... also takes the music higher.. gives a spiritual vibe to it.. i feel if you use it respectfully, and people still get offended.. well shit..
