Trip-hop

Post by blizzardmusic » Thu Aug 26, 2010 9:02 am

I've been getting in to artists like Bonobo, Flying Lotus, RJD2, Samiyam and J Dilla lately. I stumbled across Bonobo's album 'Black Sands' playing in HMV and I had to inquire about what it was.

I'm not sure how to distinguish triphop from related genres like hip-hop.

What other artists should I look for? I'm a bit of a n00b to the genre at the moment.

Can you please guide me in the direction of some good triphop artists?

My favourite 'triphop' (whatever it's called) tracks as of now.

Portishead
Massive Attack
Tricky

Mowax Records <-stuff like DJ Shadow and Unkle
Ninja Tune Records <-Sixtoo's Chewing on Glass album is nuts

I wouldn't call Bonobo trip-hop but if you like that sound check out more on Ninja Tune and Tru-Thoughts.

in terms of instrumental hip hop / trip hop, j dilla is the one

check out his album 'donuts'

also, check out the stuff coming out from the Odd Future collective from America, so sick. Tyler The Creator's beats are off the chain - check:

also, bit of shameless self promotion, i've recently moved over from dubstep to producing experimental hip hop / trip hop beats, have a listen if you have time:
