Original sound system samples

Post by dubworxrecords » Sat Mar 03, 2007 8:09 pm

I used to have a machine with about 10 buttons I wired into my mixer with sound effects like a siren, hand grenade, air horn etc, which I used when deejaying, a lot of original sound system type sounds.

2 questions...what were the original devices called that were used, and secondly does anyone have any samples I can steal, or know of anywhere I can download them?

I've moved on a bit now and I'm looking at using a MacBook along with vinyl for dropping in a few rares and samples etc...

Thanks all, 1.

You can by sound generators very cheaply from places like maplins. You have to build them yourself but its basic electronics. Very simple and quite fun. My friend has one which triggers sounds with delays etc... to get your dubwise sound. If you are unfortunate enough to have pc/windows you can get a plugin called dub siren. This is actually quite good and i wish there was an intel mac release. Alternitively you can still buy a real dub siren from the university of dub website. (I think) Might as well bust the soldering iron though and save some cash. I hope this is not patronising and of some use.

I downloaded the plug ins, they work wicked in Logic...I also contacted the University of Dub people and asked how much the box was...I'm going to have a look in Maplins tonight as well and see what they've got...sounds like something me and my yout can do together.

Bless.

i use a boss dr. sample 202 for lickshots in the dance often wired together with a kaoss pad to get the real dubby feeling. got both quite cheap from ebay years ago.

anyway, as far as i remember there's a complete lickshot package at http://www.versionist.com. file under "samples".

a nice schematic to build your own dubsiren: http://www.interruptor.ch/dub_diysiren.shtml
there are also some delay- and reverb-vst-plugins straight downloadable.

also radikal dub kolektiv from croatia are building and selling dub sirens (and i think that they're way cheaper than jah tubbys): http://www.radikaldubkolektiv.net. file under "news".

hope this was any help.

Yes people, thanks for all the replies. I'm going to try to build my own one as a test of my skills to make stuff that's good, and also cheap! I've got a couple of proper electronics heads as mates, and they're gonna help me...I might go one step further and try to include all the elements in one box...that'd be the bomb! (like tape echo/spring reverb etc)

I've checked all the links on these pages, and also found a few of my own.

I'll let you all know wha'gwan.

Peace.
