PINCH (TECTONIC/PLANET MU - BRISTOL, UK)
Pinch, real name Rob Ellis, has been a significant presence in our musical lives since his brutalist debut 12-inch "War Dub," released via his own aptly named Tectonic label back in 2005. Ellis’s more reflective 2006 Planet Mu single "Qawwali" – among the best and most distinctive dubstep records ever made – paved the way for Underwater Dancehall, his debut album of 2007. Featuring a number of wisely chosen guest vocalists, including Juakali and house diva Yolanda, Underwater Dancehall stands out as one of the most coherent, sophisticated and satisfying dancefloor-derived albums of the noughties, and, as far as dubstep LPs go, it’s perhaps second only to Burial’s self-titled debut in terms of vision, ambition and virtuoso execution. In the three years that have elapsed since then, Pinch has continued to work his fingers to the bone as a DJ and producer, releasing singles through Tectonic, Punch Drunk, Soul Jazz and Dancing Demons.

GEMMY (PUNCH DRUNK/PLANET MU - BRISTOL, UK)
Bristol's wealth of talented producers are currently pushing the boundaries of a genre that is rapidly developing in all sorts of directions, with Gemmel “Gemmy” Phillips leading the front line of its latest wave. Alongside his purple compadres Joker and Guido, the three are pushing a majestically colourful take on the sub-heavy sound of today, sculpting their own unique sound that marks them out from pretty much anyone in the scene. Determined to carve out his own sonic niche, Gemmy began to mesh together the two great loves of his childhood—the swaggering G-funk beats of Dr. Dre, and the clean and colourful melodies of 16-bit console classics like Sonic The Hedgehog—with some additional low-end histrionics for maximum dance floor impact.
With its screeching lead synth and undulating bass riff, "Bk 2 The Future" emerged as both a crowd and selectors' favourite, showing a producer who possessed the uncommon trait of knowing how to wobble with measure and restraint. After hearing the sub-low churn of his "Bass Transmitter" track, Punch Drunk boss Peverelist felt determined to sign both tracks to his label, with the 12-inch making a real splash on the international scene. The success of the Punch Drunk release meant that Gemmy was quickly snatched up by Planet Mu boss Mike Paradinas to join the new wave of dubstep-related artists that have become the vanguard of the label. Gemmy is currently working on his debut album for Planet Mu, with plans for a release in the next few months.

SNF (SUB FM - SF)
Scientist by day and beat scientist by night, Stephen "SNF" has been DJing diverse music since 2002, with three years in college radio at KJHK. After moving to San Francisco in 2005, he ended up buried neck-deep in the sound of dubstep in 2007. Sensing a lack of presence for Bay Area bass music on the internet he started Dubstepped.net in early 2009. Last November he landed a weekly radio show on Dubstep.fm, now Sub.fm (2nd and 4th Tuesday nights, 6-8pm PST), showcasing forward-looking sounds in dubstep, UK funky and bass music. Expect musical selections with syncopation, innovative sounds, and lots and lots of bass.
