HEADHUNTER (UK) AKA ADDSION GROOVE
(Tempa/Swamp81/Surfire/Transistor/Wheel & Deal)
HEADHUNTER has been a busy man since his last Christchurch appearance, he has carved out a totally unique place in the dubstep / bass / uk / futuristic / whatever –the heck you –want to call it scene with his new project ADDISON GROOVE.
Being inspired by the Chicago ‘Juke’ scene, he started dropping some of these 140bpm jacked up tracks into his sets, and it was a short gap from there to making his own take on that sound. With bouncing 808 claps and bass, warm pads, and crazy cut up vocals, the tune that blew up first was ‘Footcrab’ . Gaining attention from bass expert Loefah of Digital Mystikz, it finally ended up on wax on Loefah’s infamous Swamp81 imprint.
His previous released long player NOMAD follows an interesting sequence of developments within dubstep over the earlier stages of the sound with technoid transmissions from the likes of Appleblim, Peverelist and 2562 infiltrating dubstep with increased frequency. Striking a balance between austere futurism and engagingly emotive music, this inventive debut evokes the tone of deep techno, without descending into sheer mimicry. Headhunter treads a distinct path that takes his influences, grinds them up and spits out mutant, idiosyncratic forms—the result is a stunningly cohesive slab of post-garage hybridisation.
Ridiculously catchy and refreshingly clean, his sound is a great example of how this scene keeps reinventing itself and taking on new forms. Come down and catch one of his blistering sets in true Subtle Sound System stylee.
