Quotes from artists that inspired you

Post by Shekul » Thu Oct 14, 2010 9:36 pm

You probably all seen it before but...
Burial: I’m not a ‘musician,’ no training, nothing. So I was always scared of people who had studios. Heroes of mine like Photek suddenly became Rupert Parkes in his studio, telling everyone how he did it. The magic got a bit lost. So I thought to myself ****it I’m going to stick to this shitty little computer program, Soundforge. I don’t know any other programs. Once I change something, I can never un-change it. I can only see the waves. So I know when I’m happy with my drums because they look like a nice fishbone. When they look just skeletal as **** in front of me, and so I know they’ll sound good.

M: So you don’t use a sequencer?

B: No.

M: So does that mean your drums are not necessarily in time?

B: My drums are definitely not necessarily in time. When I try and do drums that are too regimented, they lose something. But the moment I put drums where I think they sound good, rather than in time, they seem to have that roll, the swing of the jungle and garage tunes I love.

B: Some of the elements in the drums that make that swing are the ones that don’t fit in to a time signature and that are out. The little bits that are wrong. If I used a sequencer my tunes would sound rubbish.

B: Because I don’t have a sequencer I can’t really mess around. I can’t noodle, at all. I got to shove it together and vibe off it. I make the tune, ****ing quick. Not a single tune on my album took more than a few days to make. They come together real quick and then I spend some time on the details so they’re alright to listen to.
yeah.....reached that stage where i just want to be burial.

i cant find the direct quote but Photek has said somethign to the effect of:

"individual style is dictated by what your influenced by outside of the music your making"

he was relating it more directly to making jungle and i totally misquoted him but that is what i took from the quote and i think its very true, if your only influence or inspiration is coming from within the genre your making you really dont have any true style at all.

"All that stuff, it's fucking excellent. Riley's 'In C' is great. I really like... what do they call it? Minimalism. Selected Ambient works Volume 2 is full of the simplest pieces I could make. For years, I was ignorant of music, apart from acid and techno, where I bought just about everything. But, in the last couple of years, it's been a constant barrage of me catching up with stuff. This year, I've bought and listened to 6,000 or 7,000 records. And I know 'em all by heart".

Start by forgetting that almost all sequencers let you turn off snap-to-grid.

"I believe in a prolonged derangement of the senses, to attain the unknown."
-Jim Morrison

“It is one of the commonest of mistakes to consider that the limit of our power of perception is also the limit of all there is to perceive.”
-C.W. Leadbeater

this is one that took the words right out of my mouth...

"More DJs should be playing their own music. When you travel, it becomes immediately apparent how completely unimaginative it is to just dj whatever this week’s hottest tunes on Beatport are. I see all of these DJs thinking they’re all unique and cutting edge when they drop the latest Reso or Rusko tune and it totally makes me roll my eyes....
I’m sick of people just dropping bassline banger after bassline banger with no melody or personality. It killed Drum and Bass, and it’ll kill Dubstep and Glitch Hop too if we let it. Let’s get some more melody in there, and make the tunes a bit more memorable. Too many DJ bass tunes gets overly phallocentric too. What i said above is basically the same complaint I hear from anyone who has a vagina."
-Ill Gates

"The first time I learned to DJ, I beatmatched the records immediately being a drummer most of my life. It was just like, 'That's all fucking djing is?'"
-Bassnectar

"I was in 6th grade, and my mother was driving me home from the dentist. The Loma Prieta Earthquake struck, and at first we didn’t know what was happening. All I knew is my mom was screaming, the car was bouncing like a cartoon, the trees were all bending in this unnatural way, and there was this ultra low (expletive) grindcore noise. I was like, “Oh damn!”"
-Bassnectar, again

Is there an option in Ejay to do that? :?

In all seriousness though i don't wanna copy his style. You can't beat the best. I'm just loving his stuff more than usual now.

"I don’t think you can pretend originality. Either
you tend to be a fairly original person or a fairly nonoriginal person. But let’s try
to be good first and not worry about the original or different or new. I think too
many people are tied up with those terms. They are the buzz words that seem to
have the commerce behind them. But “good” is really the word that will make
your career have any longevity. You should try to be as good as you possibly can
be with the instruments you use, whether they are an orchestra or string quartet,
pianist, or singer, or some variation of synthesizers, and it doesn’t matter
whether it’s digital or analog."

Everything Burial said in that whole article you quoted from. That's the most inspirational interview I've ever read. Even his thoughts and way of seeing life is ethereal... I go back to it every few months and fall in love with it again...

from burial i kno its missing a line or two but i had it on my facebook about thing or w.e

What I want is that feeling when you're in the rain, or a storm. It's a shiver at the edge of your mind, an atmosphere of hearing a sad, distant sound, but it seems closer - like it's just for you

"i'm as full of baloney as anybody, but it's nonetheless something i believe- but i think that to practice any art, no matter how well or badly, is a way to make your soul grow, and i think it's tragic when schools cut art out of the public school curriculum. 'Cause it's no way to make a living, it's a way to make your soul grow- and i don't understand why everyone doesn't paint or draw"

Wow. Just read that interview and he seems like a proper headcase! But in a good way. To deprive yourself of so much sleep and constantly smoke dope must surely fuck you up a bit. If music didn't exist he'd probably be in a mental institution himself.

And that Burial interview is very inspiring too.

aphex interviews, just like the burial ones need to be taken with a grain of salt and not 100% literal fact
seeing as they both have a somewhat mythos/character to play

Elvis says: I don't know anything about music. In my line you don't have to.
Don’t worry about people stealing an idea. If it’s original, you will have to ram it down their throats.
