Could Consciousness Be A Dimension?
i'm going to try my best not to sound like a rambling stoner...
In string theory, reality exists in ten dimensions + time... the main ideas i've heard is that the hidden dimensions are impossibly small or large and coiled within other dimensions..
But could conscious thought be a dimension, or at least operate in a dimension of its own? theres many theories (tinfoil hat and otherwise) about how thought can manipulate reality... so could thought itself be a part of reality in a dimension of its own, or a dimension itself that manifests within us as thought?
this is pure organic thought that just came to me, so its a little rough around the edges, so i'd love to hear your opinions/thoughts/critiques on the idea

Re: Could Consciousness Be A Dimension?
i've thought about this from time to time as well
perhaps it's the "shadow" of a higher dimension, leaving an impression on the lower dimensions which we can feel. But then I think about why we aren't able to feel other people's consciousness, because in theory you should be able to if it were a dimension... then I just go back to solipsism or that it's just a bunch of electrical impulses (which I'll never fully understand, but tend to lean towards). I don't think we'll ever fully understand consciousness and what causes it though, but that doesn't mean that it's not absolutely fascinating to think about. one of my favorite topics...

But yeah. I don't think it's a dimension.

Re: Could Consciousness Be A Dimension?
Go read 'Decline of the West' by Oswald Spengler; there is only 1 dimension and is independent of human consciousness (he's a absolutist really). The 3 dimensional maths of Classical Greece was a segregation of an enclosed area, not an absolute measure of the universe

But yeah, define 'consciousness' and 'dimension' first and then you might be making a meaningful statement...

Re: Could Consciousness Be A Dimension?
I would say consciousness pervades everything and the dimensions we exist within are constructs of a larger more primordial version. When divided and fractured within these new dimensions the universe is able to experience itself a bit, in the same way that a mirror cannot reflect itself unless a piece is broken off..
saying that, our consciousness does appear to be somewhat of an evolutionary parameter in our perception of the world around us which imo makes it quite comparable to the time dimension we experience
in an abstract sense, any integral channel that carries or contains information or data could be described as a dimension so in that sense I would agree

Re: Could Consciousness Be A Dimension?
idea sounds nice, could be used for some sci-fi at least...
but my consciousness is no dimension for your consciousness, or for planet saturn or for my fish

Re: Could Consciousness Be A Dimension?
i get serious deja vu all the time 3which led me to come in to a theory that time is a constant loop and having memories / dreams of things before they happpen are parts of your conciousness from past loops bleeding through
i want a "punch rusko, win an iphone" tshirt.

Re: Could Consciousness Be A Dimension?
string theory while interesting and a be all end all theory for everything, hasn't really had any big developments in a hot minute

Read the work by the fella that was the inspiration for the matrix. Hyper realities... It's very interesting.

I agree.
Thanks to the Bible we know of at least two Realities... the physical universe and the spirit realm, where God and spirts / angels live, of which our was created "inside" of... now... accepting that, I believe you're onto something.
We don't know how many dimensions make up the True Reality (the Heavenly spirit Realm) but we were created inside of, and to perceive, just 3. We also know that they are tied to us, by at least two--the dimension of Time & Place. (See Revelation 12:7-9)
"And there was war in heaven. Michael and his angels fought against the [devil], and the [devil] and his angels fought back. 8But he was not strong enough, and they lost their place in heaven. 9The [devil] was hurled down—that ancient serpent called the devil, or Satan, who leads the whole world astray. He was hurled to the earth, and his angels with him."
For one thing that explains why the world is in utter chaos right now, but we're not talking about that--staying on subject, the fact is that this reveals at LEAST, two Realities: A physical one, ours, and another one, were Spirits live. So parts of what govern our Universe, such as Gravity act in ways that suggest they're tied to things outside of Ours, just acting in ours, as a force. Consciousness could be one of those things.

Re: Could Consciousness Be A Dimension?
Conciousness is nothing really as far as I see. Just a process we seem to carry out. Telling someone to point at someone as a being not a physical object is like trying to point at their digestion. The way I see it is conciousness is just like a user interface part of an operating system on a computer. Our brains run and do things with out our concious control all the time and even when we've consciously made a decision our brain has already come to this conclusion before we realise anyway as in here: http://www.mpg.de/english/illustrations ... index.html

Re: Could Consciousness Be A Dimension?
basically what the OP seems to be hinting at is solipsism, just in rambling stoner speak.
least that's how it's coming off to me, unless he's talking like the matrix

He seems to be taking an incredibly complicated and technical mathematical model that scientists are still trying to figure out a sensible way of applying to measurable reality, picking a few random words from a popular-science explanation of it and then riffing on them without worrying too much about what they mean. Same old same old, really.deadly habit wrote:basically what the OP seems to be hinting at is solipsism, just in rambling stoner speak.
