Does dubstep have to be 140 bpm?

Post by Lemonlust » Thu Oct 21, 2010 10:11 pm

I mean, most dubstep songs are 140 bpm. Would it not be considered dubstep if it were a different tempo?

Any speed as long as it's mixable, 70bpm if you want. My personal opinion 125-150 Bpm.........................

35bpm is 70 bpm is 140 bpm is 280 bpm, dont kid yourself...

But generally man, 130-150 but no promises itll get mixed if you go to the extremes of those... down below 130 I have a hunch your making downtempo or house now, and up above 150 your getting into glitch, juke, house, electro, hiphop, dnb...

And if you think it has to be 138-140 listen to my sig track n tell me if what it is, if not dubstep.

135-145 is a pretty easy mixable tempo (if you're speaking about vinyl and pitching).

Just write in whatever tempo you like.

Nah, and if someone likes it enough they will find a way to put it in their mixes if they want... plus not every piece of music has to be mixed the same way, or at all.

Nope... I got loads of vinyl that varies off the standard 140. Bit of a bitch though mind you when you get so used to everything being the same tempo then it take you a little by suprise when mixing. There isnt a set tempo but I have only ever dealt with tempo's between 135 and 145.

I'm hoping that wasn't aimed at me Mr! If so I am well aware of that I started on drum and bass. Now that can be more of a c*nt to mix when your starting out.

You really think so? I honestly find dubstep A LOT harder to mix, its easier to get clashing hats and stuff!

In my opinio beat matching dubstep (whether they be the same or different tempo's) is alot easier than mixing drum and bass. I think you have quite alot less room for error in DNB and the fact it is quicker means everything you do needs to be done that little bit quicker. Also i think it is easier to determine which deck is behind or infront with dubstep also.

While I don't agree with the idea of dnb pushing you to do everything faster, I agree with the gist of that statement.
DEFINITELY had a much harder time starting dnb than I did starting dubstep, and I actually started mixing dnb when i was significantly more comfortable on the decks, then when I started mixing dubstep.
