Ablton Live Intro????

Post by kdh82 » Mon Nov 01, 2010 10:21 am

I have done a lot of research in to this and have decided to enter the world of Ableton.

I have purchased Ableton Live Intro and the Novation Launchpad controller, I have also spent some money on a Akai MPK pRO mIdi Keyboard.

So I wanted to ask, does this sound like I will have the right stuff to get started making the electronic music I want to make (influences such as APHEX TWIN/BURIAL, SAMIYAM, FLYING LOTUS FOURTET) and possibly try my hand at djing?

Any feedback much appreciated...

I'm sorry but I laugh at your supposed "research". The reason why is because anyone who goes out and buys a stack of stuff without learning to first produce tracks really isn't that well informed.

To quote the age-old phrase of a masculine defense: "It's not how big it is, it's how you use it.". To apply that to this topic - it doesn't matter what you have in your arsenal of software, hardware or anything inbetween - if you haven't produced a single track, all that stuff is going to be useless to you.

You could have saved a lot of money and spent the first year learning ableton live, then once you're comfortable with it and have a decent grasp of audio production (which never stops), then you could go out and buy whatever you think would best suit your style.

Learn aBleton live first, learn the basics of production, then worry about the rest of your toys or what you want to make. Believe me, you're going to get frustrated.

sorry maybe I didn't explain clearly enough then. My research of different DAW's involved using a friends Ableton Live for a year or so and trying my hand at tracks that way. And the controllers were similar too.

And you're still unsure as to whether you can make decent electronic music with it? -q-

Alright no worries, but my point still stands. Ableton Live alone can produce whatever you want. Once you learn it's limitations, go out and buy whatever you think is going to get around that limitation.

With Live Intro you are limited with the amount of VST's and Ableton instruments you can use at once. It will probably be fine for your needs right now and as soon as you start reaching those limitations, you can purchase the full version at a discounted price.

Here is a chart listing the differences:

Tbh I think you shouldn't of bought all that hardware and should've gotten a nice synth and some samplepacks instead since you only got intro.

I'm living off intro myself and I don't feel the need of the full version yet, but I feel like I'm missing a nice synth instead of living off free stuff.

Bit harsh here ? :?

Anyway, youve got more than enough to get going, get yourself some nice freebies (google TAL synths, Bootsie vsts), synth1, and get stuck in. Ive got the full ableton and the launchpad and its great for jamming. kvraudio is a great resource for free plugins of all kinds. Theres also the freebie native instruments players for some quality sounds to get you going.

Loads of ableton tutorials on youtube, also the tip a day from heater core is a great resource.

A wave editor such as Audacity (free), or souondforge or wavelab (expensive!) will also be useful. Have a play with audacity or wavosaur.

You haven't mentioned a soundcard, so ideally youd get one, maybe a USB focusrite or something. If not for now the bare minimum youll need is asio4all, to get decent low latency performance from your onboard sound. Id suggest a soundcard should be youre next purchase, much better sound quality and decent low latency drivers.

I might be selling a fireward card soon, cheap.

cant go wrong with focusrite imo - dont know anything about those monitors tho.

One thing i do know however is its well worth spending as much as you can/saving up for monitors... buy wrong buy twice as they say.

But prob a good starting point. :)
