A newbie fan needs some help

Post by The_Doctor » Sun Nov 07, 2010 1:42 pm

Hi, not to bore you with details, i actually am a long time (really long) trance lover/listener (please don't hurt me) with some d&b on the side, i still love them. But i also got an interest in dubstep recently, and really trying to get into it more. I can find my way around electronic dance music scene, keeping up with radio shows and podcasts, but dubstep seems kind of a more messy and disordered scene if i am not mistaken. So i need help on keeping up with the new releases which i might like and of course some radio shows/podcasts that you can suggest.

FYI, i got the virus after i heard Shambhala mixes of Excision. My mind literally blown. That heavy dirty sound is what i am after. Does he have a radio show himself ? Or any other suggestion in the same style could do.

Thanks.

id suggest you move away from that heavy dirty sound. Check out some rinse fm podcasts especially youngsta ones. Have a look at some compilations such as the dubstep allstars series aswell as 'roots of dubstep'.

Youll find, that Excision isnt a very good representation of what dubstep actually sounds like. Him and a fewothers have a pretty interesting sound but its arguably not dubstep at all really, despite the similar backing percussion...

Dubstep is a very relaxing genres, mostly built around the sub bass and dark, minimal vibes...

Around here, most people would call that 'Brostep' for lack of a better word.

Dubstep, means this:

Ahhh dont get me wrong I wasnt criticizing that or expecting him to change, was just trying to warn him that that's NOT a fair representation of what dubstep is, at all.... I totally get if he likes it, just thought Id mention, know what I mean?

Sorry if i disappointed some of you, but as Pistonsbeneath said, this is what i like. I actually downloaded the latest podcast of Youngsta, as Rahul suggested, and well, it turns out i am not into that kind of stuff. The thing is that i love dirty heavy wobbling basses and complex rhythms, i've always loved it. From some of the replies, i almost got the impression that this is not dubstep, if not what is it called ? May be it is a subgenre. Well i am here to learn anyway.

By the way, i am still in need of a weekly or monthly podcast/radio show suggestion that mostly plays what i actually love.

Again thanks for all the replies. Very nice people you are. I'll check out all your suggestions.

There are no official subgenres, alot of us call it brostep, boregore calls it gorstep, ect.

And no no no man dont get the impression you dissapointed anyone! Like I said, was just pointing out the majority of dubstep doesnt sound that way...

You might not want to base it all on youngsta either though... go on over to the mixes section and look for DMZ's last MAH appearance... And jokers mixes!!!

The thing I love about this thread is I am sure a large portion of the regulars on this forum that arent london/UK-based learned about the sound through the midrange stuff.

Nothing wrong with this, I did too, just an observation.

I used to listen to a lot of the stuff op is referencing, and http://www.youtube.com/user/InspectorDubplate was one of the first sources I came across.

In terms of blogs, then here are some I think you may like the posts from:
http://www.dubjunks.com/
http://www.rub-a-dub-dubbb.com/
http://squittybubbler.com/blog/

Big ups! and I hope these links are to your liking!
