Im a new guy - Dont worry, I dont want Datsik/Excision bass

Post by team7even » Tue Nov 09, 2010 2:07 pm

I've been making (attempting) Dubstep for a while now since I stopped making Grime beats. I put in kicks, snares, subs, synths, maybe sometimes a vocal but my tracks still sound kinda empty. Any tips on making them sound more full.

Dont worry about using really technical terms cos I can understand most of them an I'm willing to do some home work.

Also apologies if I've come across as disrespectful/speaking in a bad tone.

Alright, off the top of my head, even though I'm seriously offended by your tone.

-Stack shit. Stack drums, stack synths and pan them in different directions, etc. Stack different snares on top of each other, even with other percussion - chop that shit up!
-Use panning creatively - serious - it's important. Fill in spots and leave spots open for different effects. Use a stereo imager.
-Reverb, Delay - tends to add space and warmth, but be very very careful with this - it has the potential to turn your tracks into mush
-Spectral imaging - use a program to find the blank spots on the spectrum, edit as needed. A lot of people frown on these, saying you need to use your ears, but you need to start somewhere.

You're asking a very broad question, since it's pretty interpretive, but those are some little tips. Remember not to go overkill with any of these or you'll end up with the opposite product - a complete mess that's too full and doesn't have any room to breath.
Good luck.

It takes alot more to make a next to make a masterpiece out of 4 items then it does to make an average mess out of 100...

Take for instance modern rock music. The drum kit has only toms/ bd/ snare/ hats/ cymbals/ crashes etc. The key is using what you got to sound good instead of adding a bazillion shakers and highhats to fill in the sound.

fills, reverb, incidentals, open your tune in a spectral and see where the frequency content is lying and where it is lacking and see if harmonics may help that or not so tight eqing etc
hell a verb buss on your drums subtly used can do wonders for started

Check out the funtcase production masterclass thread. There are 2 vids posted there where he goes into some detail on how he fills out his drum tracks. I picked up a couple good tips. The Rusko producer masterclass is also a good watch.
