Yes, yet another "What should i buy" topic

Post by RmoniK » Mon Dec 13, 2010 1:49 pm

Hi all.

Ok, so i've been producing with reason on crappy hi-fi speakers for a few months now, and i'm thinking taking this a little more seriously.
I wanna buy studio monitors (probably KRK rp8's), and i suppose i need an interface (soundcard) to plug 'em into? So that's pretty much my problem. I haven't got the slightest clue of which interface i should buy. People talk to me about Tascam US-122mkII or Tascam US-144mkII. Are those sufficient for my monitors to work properly? I'm a real newb on interfaces at the moment, pretty much the only thing i haven't looked into yet.

So i'm asking you people for help, wise Gods of the dubstepforum, for a little advice on what i should buy.

summary:
- I wanna plug KRK rp8's on em
- I don't need more than two (preferably XLR) inputs, but 4 wouldn't kill me.
- I really REALLY don't want to spend a lot of money on this, since i consider it as the least useful at the moment. I really just want em for the monitors.

Thanks !

It's still a hell of a lot more expensive than those Tascams. You wouldn't happen to know anything about those would you?

What size room you in cause if you're just in a bedroom the rp8's will probably be abit big/overkill, try just getting the 6's if you're in a mid/smallish bedroom.

also i have a NI AK1 interface which might be out of youre range but it's hella good for just a small setup !

Myeah pretty much ;p And i've been adviced to take the rp8's because of the lower bass response. Should i reconsider?

yh they have better bass but if you're in a small ish room with no treatment that extra bass is just gunna cause loads of acoustic problems.

Like i said, depends what environment youre putting them in.

guess i'll go for the rp6's then. And that looks pretty cool, but i'm really to noobish to rate it at it's full potential, so some confirmation would be handy.
Thanks!

I like the Novation NiO for an inexpensive interface.

2 ins, 4 outs.

Inexpensive, reliable, good sound.

i'm not sure that a pair of 6s all on their lonesome is going to get you nearly enough bass to get a good sense of what is going on

i have 8s set up in a bedroom and excessive bass response just isn't a problem. the issues i actually have with the rp8s are: the upper-mids sound brighter (better) on your monitors than anywhere else, and the low end isn't as big as it ought to be (basically what everyone else says about them). and of course this is in comparison to a big system/twice-as-expensive monitors and isn't so hard to compensate for (the rp8s rule)

So, what are you saying? The rp8's are less equilibrated? Which ones should i buy?

Also incredible user support. They really try hard to fix your problems. The item smells nice when you get it, such a sweet manufactured smell.

the 6s are more than enough depending on the size of your room

this!

Wanted buy 8s myself at first, very glad i went with 6s. 8s are overkill in a small-medium sized room.

Go for the 8s if you want more bass imo - if your room is small buy a couple bass traps.
