Minimal TEchno

Post by cogi » Mon Mar 26, 2007 9:50 pm

Holla at me.
Seems to be the latest craze according to the blogosphere, I'd love a bit of advice on who to listen to from somebody who knows anything about it.

To me Techno = Image

Prove me wrong

There's definitely been a thread on this here before, but my searching skills evade me.

These labels are good:

Perlon
Cadenza
Kompakt
Vakant
Liebe Detail
Connousieur
Mobilee
Klang
Playhouse
Minus.

I don't know very much about techno, but I really like Alex Smoke, Trentemoller and Andy Stott.

Anything Basic Channel touches is gold. Look for anything on the now sadly defunct Chain Reaction label, which fuses minimal techno with dub influences.

Check out:

Basic Channel
Monolake
Fluxion
Vladislav Delay
Hallucinator
Vainqueur
Porter Ricks

Here's a mix you might enjoy:

Tracklist:

01 - Fluxion - Prospect II
02 - Monolake - Ice
03 - Intex Systems - Fallen Leaves
04 - Bengt - The Last Run
05 - Quadrant - Q1.1 (A1)
06 - Sanasol - Hlyleg (Ruxpin Remake)
07 - Dak - Flux
08 - Intex Systems - Sand Patterns
09 - Fluxion - Lark
10 - Vladislav Delay - Huone

Yup,.. as already mentioned. Kompakt, Perlon, Playhouse & Basic Channel are all SICK labels. If you're dubstep head you might be intruiged by just how much better minimal techno has recycled 'dub' than dubstep has. Bit of an irony that.

For listens though.. best way to hear it is in a club or in the mix so head over to www.mnml.nl and feast on the 'DJ & livesets' section. http://www.residentadvisor.net/ has some quality archived sets.. they call em podcasts for some reason but as we all know, people were putting sets together long before Apple decided to rebrand them their own.

**edit.. something you might find interesting on basic channel - http://www.basicchannel.com/label/Rhythm+Sound **

My techno misconceptions are rapidly flying out the window.
Its gotta nice dark garagey feel to it.
Like I need another genre of music to fetishise over.
Proper good for doin English Language investigations into too.

Big up for all the help and opening my ears

theres such a broad spectrum of sound covered by minimal techno, what kind of thing are you looking for?

if you like garage, try...

Alex Under (and other things on Minus, Plus8, Apnea, CMYK) - very clean, crisp, dark, hypnotic and swung

Guido Schneider (and other bits and bobs on Poker Flat) - tripped out but very jacking and swung

Akufen (and Perlon) - more minimal house than techno, although the distinction is slight. but so garagey its ridiculous

At the end of the day though, it IS all about the glowsticks. I'm afraid there's nothing you can do about that.
Pantyinspector is posting loads of Essential Mixes and WMC sets at the moment which have some pretty good stuff.

Check out the minus party stuff here: http://dubstepforum.com/viewtopic.php?t=17348
and the Richie Hawtin vs Ricardo Villalobos mix here: http://dubstepforum.com/viewtopic.php?t=15765

And Alex Under should be top of your list to check out. I might sit down and do a mix of nothing but Apnea, CMYK, Cyclical Tracks, Mupa, etc. Those Spanish dudes really know how to make techno.

I've actually never seen glowsticks at a minimal night!

No, neither have I. No fluorescent jackets, white gloves, or rave horns either. It's all terribly disapointing.

NICE!

this is nice to see on here, because i play regularily at a minimal techno night here in Ottawa (CANADA) called Techcetera, and i often play dubstep, Burial, and some dubby 2-step (early Tempa: horsepower/ Ill/ Hatcha etc), alongside dub techno,
esp. Monolake who is my current favorite....

a minimal techno dj friend cyan
(name taken from sick Monolake tune) ;P

x2 on the mix

Thanks everyone for the tips!

Have been checking out both scionversions / other basic channel-linked stuff and sahko, and I'm really liking what I hear. Sahko in particular, some of that stuff is scaringly good (or maybe just scary, I'm not sure yet)

It's never too late to discover good music, apparently.
