question about ableton...
I am trying to wrap my head around this program i just started using it and it's kind of confusing me. I think I'm finding the most confusion a lot with the arrangement view and session view. When you create an audio track or midi track there are many many slots in the session view...I don't understand this slot system...is it like the top one is the top of the chain and anyone after that goes down the chain or? because you don't putt effects in those slots....i see you put those down at the bottom. I created two different drum patterns wit the same kit. Put one in the first slot and my second in the second slot below it. I arranged them out in the arrangement view if how i want the first one to play then for it to change to the second one after 8 bars...but all i hear are the ones playing in the session...cause in my arrangement when it passes where everything is arranged...it's still playing my loops. I hope this makes sense cause i understand if i described all this in a confusing manor but hey...I'm 100% confused haha.
Re: question about ableton...
The slots in the sessions view are simply for preparing/recording/previewing clips. To draw a midi clip double click on one of the empty slots and the piano roll will appear, or if you wish to record a clip press the record enable button at the bottom and press the circle in the desired slot when you wish to record. All effects are dropped in the bottom slot, and this is where you create effect chains. You can jam out everything in session view, triggering different clips and such. If the record enable is on, everything played in session view will be recorded into arrangement view, or you can just copy and paste the clips from session view. Once you have something in arrangement view to hear only what is in the arrangement view and not the session view you must press the pink button that is illuminated near the transport controls. When it is illuminated, it means that clips are being triggered from session view. When you click it and it returns to gray, it will play what is in arrangement view. Hope this helps.
Re: question about ableton...
^ this. in short session view is for live use and arragement view is for sequencing

Re: question about ableton...
Alright and how about lowering your tones or i guess octaves to make some heavy dirty basslines? i came from using reason so all you had to do in reason for making low basslines was toss some oscillators on the synth and drop the octave on them.
Re: question about ableton...
There are many waves to make basslines. One being the popular "Operator" it's highly versatile plus you can get some warm noise. As for octaves, the easiest way to make it lower is to hit the Z or X button to change the octave. That or you can pitch bend like crazy for those really dirty noises.Genophonics wrote:Alright and how about lowering your tones or i guess octaves to make some heavy dirty basslines? i came from using reason so all you had to do in reason for making low basslines was toss some oscillators on the synth and drop the octave on them.
Not amazing advice but I hope it helps!
Edit : It's the same in Abe, oscillators and synths. Just lowering octaves. Operator FTW! Say No TO MASSIVE

Re: question about ableton...
Everyones information was very helpful, thanks! I appreciate it. I have some other questions about ableton...when it comes to layering and doing compression and eq on single kicks...combining them with other compressed and eq'd kicks to make one phat sounding kick...how is this achieved exactly? I see when you're using a drum rack you can pull effects into the pads the sounds on...so im assuming that's how you get effects on single hits? then a compression on say the whole drum kit would just be dragged down into the effects window/slider right? correct me if I'm wrong.
Is there a way to bounce your compressed, eq'd hits out then bring them back in to combine then bounce them out again? I don't even know what the best way to get drums sounding good is but all the reading i've done it seems like layering is the best way to go..but there is prob lots of ways to layer, I guess I'm just asking for some of the easiest ways to do it.

Re: question about ableton...
I layer my kicks in a drum rack (located in the native "instruments" menu) drop multiple kick samples onto the mpc pad looking bit, then if you want them to be layered, you go to the right and in the receive slot, make them on the same setting (c2# for example.) Now, they'll both play when you trigger that pad. Then you'll go to the right of this and make the release longer than 50ms. You can also eq and filter and many other things from this "simpler" window. You won't see any of these options though if you do not enable the series of buttons on the left of the rack (under the power button.) You can also now drop effects on individual hits, or on the rack as a whole. You should be in business now. Also, go watch some tutorials...

And then learn to use Google, slack-ass...
No one is going to hold your hand all the way through to the final product. If you have honestly searched out the issue yourself, THEN bring your question here. But this is NOT to be your first stop. Google, search the forum (lurk), youtube tutorials, and any number of other options are superior to asking for someone to do your work for you. You won't make ANY good impressions that way.
Edit: alright, I'm being a dick. You seem alright. Maybe I'm becoming jaded. Now go make some music.
