I'm pretty sure this story was about Captain Beefheart (if not perhaps it was Zappa, but... pretty sure it was Beefheart) - He was auditioning this young hotshot avant-garde guitarist one day in the studio. The guitarist asked him what to play: Beefheart walked over, crumpled up a sheet of paper slowly, and said "...play that." and walked away.
