Scion A/V and Atlanta Dubstep present:
DROP THE LIME
Everyone comes from somewhere, but some people wear the cities they’re from like badges of honour. Drop the Lime is Luca Venezia, one of those people whose identity is intrinsically connected to his hometown – New York City. And while many have only just heard of the magic of Drop The Lime, Luca has been honing his craft for years. From humble beginnings in a gospel choir to a childhood obsession with 50s rock’n’roll, the 26 year old has been experimenting with sound for years. His influences range from Brian Eno to rockabilly (he’s well known for
his 50s doo wop and soul sets) to Sonic Youth to Wu Tang. He also runs Trouble & Bass, an influential New York club night and label since 2006. The Trouble & Bass crew are the DJs who are defining a new New York sound.
As Luca says himself – “Having a crew from NYC behind you, pushing the sound you produce, is essential in creating a movement. We’re all producers and DJs so sometimes we’ll collaborate on production—or I’ll have one of them help out with one of my basslines – since they understand my sound better than anyone else.”
2009 was a big year for Drop the Lime. He released two huge club hits, Devils Eyes and Set Me Free, the combined force of which helped him topple the likes of Phoenix, Florence & The Machine and The XX as “Most Blogged Artist on the Planet” (Hype Machine). Luca took his unique style of DJing around the globe, farther afield than ever before, crisscrossing North America many times as well Europe, China, Singapore and Australia. Videos of kids losing their minds to his unique sets, mixing rockabilly and club music with live vocals on top are all over YouTube.
2010 sees him continue his quest to be one of the world’s leading DJ/producers, with a slew of singles and debut album about to hit in a big way. Keep your eyes on the Elvis Presley of dance music!
STYLE OF EYE
He started out working in the studio in the late 90ies and began to develop his unique style of music with releases and remixes on such prolific labels as Classic Recordings, Tiny Sticks and Rabid Records - to name just a few - or most recently on Dirtybird and John Dahlbäck’s Pickadoll label.
His understanding of electronic music goes far beyond stereotyped thinking as you can tell from going through the list of different labels he has released on. Linus melts down electrish bleeps, hysteric synthezisers, raw percussions, minimalism, big mouthed basses and soulful chords in order to create the club destroying monsters.
After the success of “The Big Kazoo” E.P (Dirtybird) (#1 on the Heavy Rotation in IDJ´s February Issue), followed up by “The Prophet” (Pickadoll) Style Of Eye´s first artist-album will see its light in May 2008 on Pickadoll. Watch out for Style Of Eye, he is certain to become the “important star” that DJ Magazine predicted he would be.
His releases are being played by such well-known names as Sven Väth, John Dahlbäck, Claude VonStroke, Tiga, and Laurent Garnier, M.A.N.D.Y amongst many others.
FRANKI CHAN
Diligence, tenacity, and creative vision are what set DJ and IHEARTCOMIX Records owner Franki Chan apart from the rest. In a decade of revivals and reimagination, Franki Chan holds close the ideals and vision that has brought him to the forefront of his craft, seamlessly merging music and art by way of live performances and comics; all of which contribute to creating a pop-renegade aesthetic that defines the energy and unpredictability of the man himself. This post-digital renaissance artist has created an empire of all the things he loves and is.
Franki Chan has proven to be an iconic fixture amongst the eccentric background of an industry that is ever changing. His signature fedora and thick rimmed glasses have become a regular presence worldwide, with notable appearances at festivals like Coachella and Lollapalooza, clubs like the legendary Fabric in London, and everywhere in between. His mixing craft and ability to forecast what’s next have turned this digital punk version of Clark Kent into an artist that will continue to provide dance floors with the salvation they’ve been looking for. Franki’s endless touring schedule has led him to share the stage with a barrage of talented artists such as Justice, Diplo, Boys Noize, A-Trak, and Drop The Lime to name a few. Beginning with only a single turntable and a cassette
deck, Franki’s continued dedication to music and its ability to bring people together has certainly breathed new life into shaping the way we listen to and enjoy our nights on the town, especially when it comes to throwing some of the best parties and events in the LA area and beyond. Even if you’ve never been to a Franki Chan party, the energy and essence of his events have surely impacted the ideology of what it means to throw a memorable event.
In 2009, Franki Chan added producer to his already impressive résumé of cultural and artistic achievements. Franki is currently working on original tracks (debut single out Spring 2010) that will no doubt brings us the best in what we have come to know of his production skill through the several projects he has remixed for other high caliber artists such as Acid Girls, The Toxic Avenger, and The Very Best. Just like his DJ sets, we can expect an onslaught of dynamic, high-energy arrangements, deeply rooted in techno with a more rhythmic and percussive edge. In the meantime, with the success of his contribution to the Scion A/V Mixtape series (IHEARTCOMIX #21), Franki will release a series of new mixtapes that will surely encapsulate the spirit of his live performances.
GINA TURNER
Originally hailing from New York, Gina Turner grew up with the NYC House sounds of clubs like Shelter and Sound

She has caught the attention Laidback Luke, Zoo Brazil & many other european producers, and with that comes collaborations that are legendary. Tiesto's label BLACK HOLE RECORDINGS will be releasing her track "BANG IT" with Zoo Brazil in Late October 2009. Gina's 2009 collaboration with Laidback Luke has birthed a new production duo called "Nouveau Yorican." The tracks that they have coming out can be described as latin inspired shuffle tech house. SECTION 8
Mike Waterbury, aka Section 8, fell in love with Drum & Bass in early 1999 after moving down to Atlanta from his hometown in Connecticut. Influenced by many sounds including Virus, Subtitles, Hospital, & Atlanta-based Shadow Law, his love for Liquid & Neurofunk was crystal clear in every set. After playing at numerous Drum & Bass events throughout the southeast, he soon became one of Atlanta's top locals. One of his highlights was having to fill in for the legendary LTJ Bukem, and performing alongside MC Conrad in April of 2005. That same year, Section 8 took the next step & started producing Drum & Bass. Two years later, in 2007, he discovered a huge attraction to Dubstep after hearing such artists as Vaccine, Vex’d, and Burial. Now primarily focused on Dubstep, he is trying to bring something new to the table with his sound. Known for his signature synths and driving basslines, Section 8 is making his name known worldwide. In September of 2009, Section 8’s debut release entitled “Mercury EP” was released on Abducted Records. Only out a few days, “Boulevard” appeared in Beatport’s Top 100 for Dubstep. Since his debut release, Section 8 has kept incredibly busy in the studio, especially after linking up with with top producers Killeralien, B1t Crunch3r, Phonetic System, Mouch, Vesicle, Dubtek, TZR, & Press.
