subs : samples or synth
i havent used samples for subs ever since I learned to program synths. DJ madd in his Q&A talked about how he uses samples for his subs, so I'm sure there's plenty of other producers with a similar quality sound doing the same thing. Whats the point of using samples for this?
Re: subs : samples or synth
faster workflow to me...using samples
Re: subs : samples or synth
I tend to use samples, mainly because I have a large collection of them going back years. All different flavors of subs. Any bass that I synthesize tends to get sampled anyways.

Re: subs : samples or synth
I prefer using synths and making my own, it feels a bit more of my own work then if you get me.
Re: subs : samples or synth
i think sometimes sampled subs have a lot of warmth to them , for example the classic 808 boom. i use them sumtimes but i dont think youve got as much control to manipulate them so mostly i use synths.
Re: subs : samples or synth
I usually sample. I have a nice collection of subs that I have either found or made on a synth. Doesn't make much sense to keep synthesizing the same sound over and over again. For me it feels like I have more control over the sound in a sampler. Probably mostly in my head tho as I lean towards sampling more than synth.
Re: subs : samples or synth
Synths. I don't know why I would sample something that is often just a sine wave.
Re: subs : samples or synth
combo of synths and 808 kik samples for all my subbass.
i like to keep a lot of my subbass in the synth so i can control pitch envelopes, lfos, filters, automation etc very easily

Re: subs : samples or synth
depends, but 99% of the time i'll use a synth, it means i have absolute control over everything.
Re: subs : samples or synth
Subtractor, sine wave, octave 1, job done. Seriously. No seriously. No really. I ain't shitting you. There's nothing wrong with using samples but there's no benefit to it over using a synth unless it suits the workflow of your DAW better.
People go so apeshit over their subs I really don't get it, just stick a sine wave in there and get on with your track...I mean if you wanna get into the next layer of the bass above the sub in what I'd call the low mid area then yeah there's more too it but for a sub?? Just a sine wave...just a fricking sine wave...

Re: subs : samples or synth
It's easier to use a sine wave sample than to use a synth to make a sine wave.gnome wrote:Synths. I don't know why I would sample something that is often just a sine wave.
It's not like either routes are difficult though, sub bass is probably one of the easiest parts of making dubstep.

Can't see how one is easier than the other, It's the easiest thing ever using the 3xOsc in FL Studio.glottis5 wrote:It's easier to use a sine wave sample than to use a synth to make a sine wave
Re: subs : samples or synth
I can load a single sinewave in a sampler faster, then you can load a 3xosc, and turn down the two volume controls. (im just arguing because thats what I like to do, I use the 3xosc 90% of the time for sub)j-one wrote:Can't see how one is easier than the other, It's the easiest thing ever using the 3xOsc in FL Studio.glottis5 wrote:It's easier to use a sine wave sample than to use a synth to make a sine wave

Re: subs : samples or synth
For those saying you have more control with a synth than a sampler... What can you do with a synth that you can't do with a sampler in regards to sub? I can't think of anything. And with a sampler you can loop and reverse to create some interesting effects. I have done it both ways, just trying to further the discussion here.

We should have a DSF production meet up, where we all bring are setups, and see who can make a sub the fastest.

Re: subs : samples or synth
In certain situations, I agree, but then - how much control do you need over a sub, before any FX are applied? Most control/automation you'd put on them, are fine post-fx anyways.walker101 wrote:i think sometimes sampled subs have a lot of warmth to them , for example the classic 808 boom. i use them sumtimes but i dont think youve got as much control to manipulate them so mostly i use synths.
