Sub bass to make ya chestplate shake
I'm talking serious sub, like Mala's "City Cycle"
I can happily whack a sine and triangle and make something deep, that sounds nice. But there's something about Mala's sub (and many other producers like Truth, Fused Forces, loads more) that'll shake the pubes off a donkey. Serious sub power!
What's the secret? I've only got a pair of studio monitors in my setup, should I really be investing in a subwoofer?
Shitty YouTube quality but sure most of the heads will have or know this tune

Re: Sub bass to make ya chestplate shake
i don't think that they do magic....
some frequencies just rattle so wickedly.... try 40-42hz + EQing
jason @transition does the rest i guess

Yeah. Guess its about finding the ideal octave/note range for you sub. More testing needed.vulvavibration wrote:i don't think that they do magic....

Lol @ virks
Re: Sub bass to make ya chestplate shake
slight tube saturation or light distortion can work wonders on a sub to add that extra audible umph.

To be honest I literally think in instances like that it's just a sine wave but the levels have been placed much higher than people would normally consider 'acceptable' for some reason it works. I think in a club that tune wouldn't rattle ya anymore than any other deep subby tune though cos the levels are controlled by the system/mixer.

+
the kick is not very subby or loud so the sub itself has so much room to breath.
Re: Sub bass to make ya chestplate shake
oh... there is one other thing:
leave enough headroom.
lowcut everything.

trust we all want mala's secret formula

Re: Sub bass to make ya chestplate shake
Some useful tips in here, will experiment a bit later. Had never thought the kicks take up less space so the sub can take more.

Re: Sub bass to make ya chestplate shake
The Main note/Key you use can help
get hold of a pitch to frequency table and check what notes give a good frequency and scope for basslines.
You wanna work with Hz of less than 100 so there is room for your Kick above it.
if C is your main note you get one @65Hz, octave below is 32.5Hz or octave above 130Hz.
this means you are kinda stuck with 65Hz because above will clash with your kick and below you will only hear in Club...
It will still work but bear that in mind..
I find a G works nice with main @49Hz giving Octave @97hz
an E, F or F# will give you lower 40Hz which will give you an Octave below your Kick
EQing will help but you should try to EQ harmonically and use frequencies which are inherant to the Key of your track...

Re: Sub bass to make ya chestplate shake
best key for sub is definitely F.. F1 on a bare sine wave with some light saturation is gorgeous -

Re: Sub bass to make ya chestplate shake
Yeah they mix the tune so the percussion is low in the mix and the sub is high so it sounds like it's so bass heavy.
Pure sines rattle subs the best so don't fuck with them! Fuck with the layers on top

Once upon a time that was a definition of dubstep - 'skinny beats, fat bass'. It's a bit more 'all of everything all of the time' in a lot of cases these days. I don't have any answers for you op, but just through playing around I've noticed that some notes just seem more powerful than others when at such a low frequency. I think using that to your advantage may be the key.
I really, really love when I hear a track and there is emphasis on the sub at the right places. It's like no stone was left unturned, love it.

jungle used to be like that as well-- check the kick in the mix of "original nuttah"-- track bangs like no one's business, but seriously? NO KICK AT ALL.macc wrote:Once upon a time that was a definition of dubstep - 'skinny beats, fat bass'. It's a bit more 'all of everything all of the time' in a lot of cases these days. dont reverb your sub, you dont want those low frequencys bouncing around out of control.filthy_ wrote:sine wave, down two octaves

It's not what we have against kicks... it's what we have for basswhat exactly is it that the UK has against kick drums?

Dub reggae is basically the same though, innit, and it all comes from there really... a weedy kick on the 3 and that's your lot
