Dubsteppers in South Wales??

Post by Cali » Tue Jan 11, 2011 10:14 pm

The scene is quite quiet down here.
I was wondering if there are any followers from Wales around?

Cardiff here. There's a fair bit of dubstep around. Most of it your standard club fodder. We've recently had Kryptic Minds and RSD down though, and I missed both of them (fucking disappointing to say the least).

We get good night occaisionally. Especially when they're on the top floor of Clwb Ifor Bach. Decent soundsystem there. I saw James Blake in Buffalo Bar a few weeks back but I wasnt that impressed by the sound from what I heard

Cardiff is pretty lively, you got neuropol and obey on the smaller scale, also bedlam and hospitality have pretty big dubstep 2nd rooms. Also check out our boy Magenta, Cardiffs finest

Mmm, Cardiff here as well...and its really not great round here. Sounds biased, but the guys behind obey are some mates of mine who seem to be the only guys really wanting to bring something different to cardiff. You can get down to neuropol, or bedlam or a few other nights fairly regularly, but they are total student wobble fodder (exceptions being a few of the local DJs actually! If you see Mr Ben or the man Diversify on a line up, you know theres going to be some tunes worth wiggling too. Diversify is actually one of the best selectors going...badman

Anyhoo, my point is Cardiff at least is still struggling a bit. Some promoters trying to bring the goods (the obey boys have brought RSD, Atki2, Synkro, King Cannibal and others in the past - and I believe they have big plans soon...) but imo there is far too many nights which will be one big name brought in, who is then backed up by a total lack of soundsystem, support consisting largely of aggresive mid range, and in some cases an audience that doesnt seem to have a fucking clue. I remember pinch coming to Cardiff about a year ago, and playing up in clwb ifor bach with just absoloutely no soundsystem. It was all a bit disappointing until he dropped Eyez (when it was still fresh as a daisy :D) and I went bananas, looked round to see what the crowd was doing and it was just a half empty dancefloor basically standing still...lame

Can't see it changing too quickly either. Myself and a couple mates of mine had a weekly night going for a year or so (a good 3+ years ago now though) and the most notable feeling when trying to do so, is that the other nights in the city are competition. We just wanted to make a free night with good music...but other promoters definitely didn't have the same approach. They need to learn to help each other rather than compete, and until that happens (in my eyes) Cardiff is probably going to stay pretty stale.

Ha, just had another look and this didnt exactly answer your question! The answer to that is me too :) Playing down at the odd obey night, but otherwise not up to too much. Don't know how much longer im going to be in south wales for!

The thing is we don't exactly have a decent venue with a good enough sound system here.

I'm originally from Bridgend (yeah...). This meant I had pretty much zero cultural reference in EDM, until I came to uni in Brighton.

The first time I came back home I went to Monkey Bar in Swansea to see Doctor P (I was young and naive then! ) and it was pretty damn disappointing system-wise and the atmosphere was a bit more drug-orientated if you know what I mean.

I can't even imagine a club catering for the deeper stuff (now that's what I like) in South Wales.

Hopeful for the future...

I personally feel as though cardiff will never have a credible scene due to a couple of reasons. The first is the student population and their love of midrage wobblz,if the promoters want to make a living purely on promoting then they dont have much choice but to book the names that they know will sell.Second is down to a good venue.I think most places in cardiff are either quite plush or cater to a live band enviroment. That being said, the vaults would be an amazing venue if it didnt just cater to the house djs.

Dont get me wrong neuropol, obey and recently signature have brought in some top names but i dont think there'll ever be a scene for the heads.

My mates run Locked around Bangor, they had Synkro, Indigo, Submotion Orchestra and a few others not long ago at an amazing venue. Realise that this doesnt much answer your question but thought it might be of some relevance!

I'm from south wales, only been to two dubstep nights here though. Saw Instra:mental and Silkie at clwb ifor bach (two separate nights). The DJs that came on prior were just a bare wobble shitfest, then the rooms half emptied when instra:mental and Silkie came on. The system in there is pretty terrible. They both killed it though, but the rudeboys couldn't jam to instra:mental's 140 4x4 stuff, nor could they get down to Silkie's more smooth stuff. The guy who came on after Silkie was the only good local DJ though, can't remember his name, Discord I think? Played Footcrab and all the students just had blank stares on their face. I got wrongly arrested after the Silkie event too because loads of bros were fighting outside afterwards and some poor kid got knocked the fuck out by like some roidhead, and the rozzers thought it was me because I had a skinhead. They let me go though after 20 minutes of questioning in their car, but cut my wrists to FUCK in the handcuffs. Fuck cardiff.
I always travel to bristol for decent events, it's only £15 quid on the train from where I live and you're always spoilt for choice every friday and saturday.

Since turning 18, I've been meaning to check how feasible it is to train down to Bristol. Still haven't got round to it. Still haven't got round to trying to get a few mates and trick them into a trip to DMZ or FWD.

left cardiff now cos finished uni there but during my time there, i don't think i went to one club with a semi decent soundsystem. i think most of the times, i could hold a conversation without raising my voice too much or asking others to repeat what they said cos the music's too loud

Hey new to the forum.

I really think there's a fair bit of grass is greener on this forum. There are some really healthily attended dubstep nights in Cardiff including Neuropol and Aperture. Both bring names and support the local DJs and there's really nothing wrong with the system in Clwb Ifor Bach. It is a compact Line-array which visibly makes it appear less than it is I guess if you don't know a lot about rigs....

Anyhow, thats not to say there aren't bigger and better events and systems in other towns I'm just saying Cardiff really doesn't have it that bad.

The only real instance of fighting I've been aware of at clwb was when a non-regular promotion was added to a night that consequently haven't been invited back since.

There's a new Dubstep night starting in Bridgend (mid way between Cardiff and Swansea) at Hobos. At present Hobos is a bit of a hidden gem in bridgend town but it's got a 200 capacity back-room and 4 way Turbo-sound system with full monitor setup for MCs and DJs thats perfect for dubstep and other alternative dance events.

Anyhow I'll stick more info on the listings closer to the date.

As an aside I'm good friends with the boys who run the vinylism shop in swansea who also run a banger of a night called Allsorts at monkey bar.

yea....sound in upstairs of Welsh club really isn't that bad...... certainly compared to most other trendy venues in cardiff. Fukin hate raves at the Great hall as well....great for rock utter poo for beats imo.

Alot of the post dubstep/uk house artists are popping up in cardiff right now thanks to Signature/OBEY and occasionally Neuropol. They've had Roska, Lone, James Blake, all dead recent and have got Bass Clef, SBTRKT, Pariah, Doc Daneeka & Ben UFO soon so cardiff's got loads of interesting stuff in terms of BASS.

I live in swansea and the scene round here has largely consisted of bro-step acts for the last 1 1/2 yrs. Before that it was ina pretty good place but that was down to Doc Daneeka who used to run Slam on the breaks.....he had Benga, Kromestar and even Vexed' like back in late 2005!!!

Last yr has seen doctor p and his crew down as well as borgore, caspa, emalkay, excision, datsik, nero and we got joker/plastician in a couple of weeks. Kinda a healthy level of competition at the minute and i think/hope people are starting to get a little bored of the noisy mid-range wobble.

Personally i love the dj's (like oneman,Ramadanman, Jackmaster, martyn, Skream) who have the ability to switch between moods and styles instead of playing just dubstep......there is an amazing amount of crossover between house/techno/dubstep artists at the minute and i'm getting together with DVRSFY and another friend to launch a new once a month night in an underground venue in swansea that covers this territory.

Allsorts have got London Elektrcity with Emalkay soon n all.......that'll be good!

btw...DownNdirty......we're u in monkey on weds??? was a right mess but i was talking to some guy and he was talkin about this new night in Bridgend......just wondering if it's u???

Sorry yeah I should have mentioned that really. Definitely the biggest problem Cardiffs got at the mo. Don't know if anyone remember the Jigsore soundsystem boys from Cardiff ways, but they used to do the sound for our night. It was so good of em, absoloute champions. Used to bring down the rig (6 18" bins, and a lovely pair of mid-tops, all made for dubstep) spending hours setting it up/taking it down every week for absoloutely nothing. As long as they could have a bit of a spin they were happy! Anyway, when we finally got kicked out of our first venue for it being too loud (mmmm it was awesome though :D ) and tried to find somewhere else. However, there was nowhere happy to let us bring a rig in! The old Q-bar (was it q-bar? hmm...whats now "glam" or whatever) were happy to have us, but only if we used their soundsystem...sucked

The boys ended up moving down to Bristol, where they can actually use the rig! Put on some awesome nights in the black swan. Bristols kind of the best answer really :(
