NI MASSIVE gritty bass

Post by greggianopoulos001 » Wed Jan 19, 2011 3:39 am

I have been working with massive for a little now and am getting the hang of it pretty well, i am trying to get a real gritty sounding bass ( almost like tremolo guitar picking) for a part in my song. I couldn't really find to much of a better idea of what i am trying to get a other then this track. check it out at like 27 seconds in for that whole bass sequence. IM not trying to copy this bass what so ever i just want to know which tricks in massive can get a crispy wobble like that.

all help is appreciated.

Sounds like a pretty standard wub with a good bit of distortion afterwards to me.

Use the mod osc in massive too, add some phase etc. i'd say you'd get very close using massive by itself..

God I hate massive's sound. That sound illustrates excatly why. All the other synths are fucking awesome, but then there's that massive bass. Completely destroys any warmth the track had.

Doesn't have much distortion on it, but definitely sounds like scrapyard osc.

IMO you just can't beat massive for big, aggressive basses.

Scrapyard wavetable, slow lfo or other modulation source on the WT pos, insert fx distortion, done.

It's just not used properly in many cases.

I'm interested in the answer to this question too - the cripiness of the wobble - that comes from distortion after the LFO? I've tried this, the trouble is that the wobble effect is lost because the distortion distorts everthing - when the cutoff is closed as well as when it is open...

EDIT: maybe LFO the disortion in time with the cutoff?

try the effects at the bottom part of the GUI. theres a few in there that give interesting sounds. and just try LFOing random things and see how it sounds. Oh and try adding some noise and possibly modulating that. Dimension expander helps too.

I think it would be useful to work out the actual principles of the sound, rather than synth specific advice - afterall, the sound can be made on any synth. Do you actually know how to make the sound?

I've gotten some pretty gritty sounds, but not really anything like the tremolo picking-ish sound the OP is looking for, and I know exactly what sound he's talking about and TBH I've never been able to get it. The best results I've gotten were with the parabolic shaper and a bitcrusher. But in short, no I don't, maybe I should have clarified that, but that's the case with most of the sounds in my head I try to create, I have a sound I'm trying to make, and I end up coming up with something different than I intended that is unique and still fits into the context of the song. I'm just giving him some ideas that I use to make sounds a little more gritty in massive, and I'm interested to see what other people say in this thread, because my gritty basses could use some improvement too.

here is the "help make this sound" thread where you can post this and hopefully someone will get back to you. if you are new here then that is just a warning so you don't get in trouble by any mods.

also i would be more than happy to help you out but the video has been taken down for copyright issues. if it would be possible to redirect me to another link so I can see what you are talking about?

You can get nice and gritty stuff by using the routing with all it's feedback options etc

sorry to be a little off topic, but are you using fm synthesis in fm8 or just additive synthesis? i have trouble getting any sort of useful sounds out of it.

and to the OP, i had an idea that I'm going to try as soon as I can a chance, maybe try putting a really fast square wave tremolo effect or something similar.

edit: okay i just tried it and got pretty close to what i think you're talking abouGt. heres what i did:
-first osc to square saw 1, with wt pos, int, and amp at 75 percent
-second osc to scrapyard, wt and int at 25%, amp at full
-third osc to g pulse, everything all the way up
-filter 1 and 2 mix at 50% on all the oscillators, filters set to parallel
-filter 1 to lp4, cutoff and res at 30ish%
-filter 2 to bandpass, cutoff at 10%, bandwidth at 50%, resonance at 0
then for the lfo's:
-lfo 5 xfaded 40% between sqaure and triangle wave, modulating the amp on osc 1 and wt position on osc 2. rate almost all the way up
-lfo 6 to sine wave or whatever you want to use for your wobble, modulation int on osc 1 and cutoffs on both filters
effects:
-insert 1: sine shaper 75% wet
-fx1: classic tube 50% wet 75% drive
fx2: dimension expander set to taster
-EQ: high shelf all the way up.

still perfecting it, but i really like the way it sounds and its getting pretty close.
im going to mess around with the routing options.
