Haiti burns 400tons of genetically modified seeds

Post by seckle » Wed Jan 26, 2011 12:31 pm

Monsanto is the same company that created agent orange in vietnam, and they're now experimenting with genetically modifiying the worlds most common seeds like maize and others. These Haitians made a statement and a half!

Well they've been doing that for quite some time. It's pretty fucked.
The genetically-modified seeds such as those donated and later immolated, cannot be saved from year to year. Some so-called terminator seeds - the DNA of which is altered so as to not drop seed after harvest - require the farmer to buy new seeds from Monsanto the following year in a legally binding contract, instead of collecting the seeds that would have naturally developed on the plant before its DNA was modified. Other GMO seed which do drop fertile seed may not be replanted by contract. Diminished yields, health problems and weakened prospects to buy the next season's seeds in consequence of and combined with that binding contract with Monsanto have driven many rural farmers to poverty, and subsequently led to a rash of farmer suicides in rural India. Since 1997, more than 182,936 Indian farmers have committed suicide, according to a recent study by the National Crime Records Bureau.

its not capitalism, its the seemingly innate and boundless ability of humans to mercilessly exploit each other and the earth they live on.
most political systems would work fine if humans were nice. but we aint.

(plus without capitalism driving progress we wouldnt even be able to know or discuss this)

turns my stomach that they'd donate these doctored seeds to haiti, a country on the verge for decades. remember that the need to doctor maize (basically corn) is to make high fructose syrup cheaply....the product getting the whole world sicker and sicker...

haha exactly! its the system that makes the most of what we already have!

but in all seriousness, on a humanitarian level monsanto are sickening, all im saying is dont blame a system for what people do.
on the flipside, blaming them entirely for poverty on indian farms is a bit extreme, there are many many other factors to consider. most of which are also caused indirectly by the west, but not monsanto impaticular.

im no devout anything, all im saying is that if you think the flipside of the political extreme is better look at china ffs.

so what would you suggest?
i understand the flaws in capitalism, but what else is there realistically?
holy shit at least we get a modicum of freedom, even if it is dictated to some my media and corporations. better than having it dictated from the barrel of a gun.
