does the weather affect how/when you make music?

Sunset in late spring/summer when everything is calm and there is still that sharp nip in the air. I always write my best stuff at that time.

Another question : Do you think climate affects musical style? I ask because I've noticed that most dubstep, hell maybe even most music I like was made North of the Tropic of Cancer. Dubstep is seems to be a very 'northern' thing, yeah?

once you get far enough south, they're making island tunes on organic outdoorsy instruments, not cranking out club beats on PCs..

lol... nah but in jamaica for instance, even in club music, the emphasis is on vocal styles with really simple beats. Check out dancehall, its all some kick, shaker, percussion, a guitar chord, and a donk. I love that sound tho

lolz... something I've been thinking about recently. I think its more for the reasons stated above. In the north, the winter sucks, and theres not as much opportunity for fun, compared to , I dunno nameless Caribbean beach or Koh Samui. Lots more screentime when the weather is shit.

The transition from Rocksteady to Reggae in Jamaica had a lot to do with the record heat wave there in the summer of 1966: it became literally too hot to play that fast (Rocksteady being in the same tempo range as Ska, typically) so it slowed down, waaaaay down. In addition to Rastafarians coming into their own at the same time, and more than likely also because of the collie they brought with them... all adds up to become the foundations of Reggae.

like maybe the reason we don't know a lot of "musical legends" (then also maybe lets define what a musical legend is for a start) from the south of the tropic cancer as you put it out might also be linked to other factors.

like say you're a guitarist with mad skills in some remote village deep down in bolivia, yeah i'm afraid the openings for media coverage might be slightly less numerous than in UK isnt it, or like maybe you're some dj producing bare tunes on a laptop from 1976 in sierra leone, and bam you walk on a landmine and no one ever gets to hear your awesome killer tracks, just sayin there might be some other reason

this said, back on topic, yes the climate does probably influence

I believe it was the transition from Ska to Rocksteady. Then Reggae was a short leap from there. I just got this book called Young, Gifted and Black about the Trojan Records story, and they talked about it. It was so hot that summer, the rudebwoys talked the musicians into playing slower because they didn't want to dance to ska tempos. Nonetheless, the transition from Ska to Rocksteady to Reggae was only about 2 or 3 years.

I'd say the reason is more Socioeconomic, and not some lack of media coverage. YouTube is the new TV, doesn't cost money to get exposure there (yet). People in Bolivia and West Africa don't have the funds to spend on a nice DAW/Gibson/Marshall Stack. I would also venture to say they don't have the same amount of free time as european/american kids. Not much room to develop your skills while making a dollar a day. I'd imagine at that point, feeding yourself/family is the priority.

Jamaica is quite a bit different than West Africa or Bolivia, just based on influx of tourist dollars alone. I can't name a single person that I've ever met that has been in West Africa, for any reason, not even church shit. Not exactly the tourist trap, neither is Bolivia.

Why the hell did I waste my time thinking about this? I dunno, but the more I do, the more thankful I am that I was born in the Northern/Western Hemisphere. Lots of opportunity. Apologize in advance if im jacking ur thread.

pitch, strech, verb, ring-mod, ect. for some really dark textures.
