Genre breaks?
So now that i have my new pc up and running, i feel as though i should be pumping out tunes! however i have total writers block ATM. dubstep just isnt happening for me right now. i got some sick ideas and have been making cool hiphop beats though.
Do you ever take a break from producing dubstep or whatever genre to produce another for a while? do you feel it helps you get a little refreshed before moving on to the next genre? or do you mix it up?

Re: Genre breaks?
Dood, the rats are jumping off the sinking ship of dubstep, and they seem to jumping into hiphop. I know I've been making more hip hopish stuff. Glitch hop, or what did they name it this week, cracklestep? As good a name as any, I'm a little more juicy than crackly, but to each their own.
Check a thread in the general discussion with the title cracklestep or something like that. It was a production thread until a bunch of brosteppers decided to flip the script.

I try to make all sorts. I'm gonna try electronica next time.
By the way, the start to Amy Winehouse's "You Know I'm No Good" would make a great hip hop beat.

forgot to mention that i am making all kinds of music right now, like a f'ing musical explosion, and no genre is safe. Just cranked out 3 tracks that are in some hard genre, I don't know, I don't listen to that stuff, but it was fantastically hard, repetitive, and EXTREMELY distorted. I'm having the most fun making hip hop and pop (if there is any difference between the two).

Re: Genre breaks?
i always jump about different genres as i don't just like dubstep and it's not the only thing i hear in my head
Re: Genre breaks?
Going off into different genre's expands your mind on so many other possibilities.
Had a bit of creative block recently too, fixed it doing just this!

Re: Genre breaks?
atm im working on 153 bpm 'dubstep' tune
no need to go all "today im gonna be making a >insert specific genre here< tune"
i love working in 120bpm 4x4 beats when im not in the mood for dubstep
sometimes i just make bare beats and then weeks later ill use them for something..
sometimes i just go fuck u computer and mess around on the piano

Re: Genre breaks?
Dubstep is actually my 'break' from dnb. I also like to make general down tempo weirdness.
I find when writing a type of music I don't listen to very often you end up being a bit more original cos you got nothing to rip off

Re: Genre breaks?
I've never sat down and said to myself "Today I'm going to make a dubstep track" or "Right, now it's time for a 4/4 beat". I just load up samples and instruments and play around until I find something I like that I can loop for hours without getting bored. Then I'll construct the tune around it. Let the sample dictate the tune.

Re: Genre breaks?
Ive been making a lot post-apocolyptic-prehistoric-aftershed-dramastep-infused-dub recently.
But seriously, yes I love making a bit of house, or Dnb. My proper background is guitar/piano music so that's always fun.

Re: Genre breaks?
I try to restrict myself from genre entirely... Like, total disillusionment from that word. Dont limit yourself on any given parameter, but make each n every one your own. This way, you never need to change, because you never sit still.
The musics pretty well got infinite possibilities, why you would ever walk the same road twice is beyond me.

Re: Genre breaks?
electronic music is genreless now, just goes on bpm catagorizing. however i find layout out a 'style' in my head before production helps work flow. if not spend an hour or so changing the tempo, not deciding, then binning the beat.
