Earplugs
Anyone wearing them at raves? Do they affect the sound quality much? What are the best brands? I keep getting ringing in my ears and I'm worried its gonna become permanent.

Re: Earplugs
ER15's ftw.
£180 fitted earplugs. Probably can get them done cheaper elsewhere.

Think im in the same boat as you though, dunno what its like to dj with them.
ive used cheap earplugs whilst djing afew times (with both good and bad results) and i always use plugs in a rave too.
Within regards to the OP, IMHO earplugs are essential for a regular raver...why bother taking the risk of losing your hearing?

Re: Earplugs
ER15's are my recommendation, alright £180 is a lot, but you only get two ear drums (three if you're lucky like me).#
All they do is reduce the velocity of the sound, cutting out certain frequencies, keeeping clarity and bass though...

Re: Earplugs
yup, earplugs are definitely essential.
for cheap the etymotic ER20s or the Alpine MusicSafe Pro's are both good - i like the Alpine's a bit better, they fit my ears better and sound a bit clearer, but both are pretty good.
if you've got the $ def go for the custom molded ones

Can't stress this enough, worth every penny.Omega Dub wrote: if you've got the $ def go for the custom molded ones
If you don't have $$$ or your short on time it is always worth picking up something to protect your hearing, chemists will usually stock cheap ear plugs which may not seem to do much when you use them but every little bit counts.
Re: Earplugs
After a few years of regular raving and coming out of a venue with ringing ears almost on a weekly basis i've decided i need to buy some. Ive always been "na fuck that itll just make it quieter" but tbh thats sorta what i want now, i love standing near the speakers for the bass ect. but its destroying my ears.
Just bumping as i too wanna know what they're like for djing? My hd-25s give me a bit of an ear ache after a while so would like some that work nicely with those.

Re: Earplugs
Damn I've never really thought about this. I'm going to my first gig very shortly (Distance). I'm wondering if things are different here in the US, I mean, DMZ and nights like that are famoous so of course the sound system is going to be ridiculous. But I have a feeling the place here in the US where the gig is, isn't even going to compare soundsystem wise, to whats in the UK.
Re: Earplugs
Ive bought those universal earplugs from BM Soho and I think they're really good.
I cant say that they affect the sound quality or anything, you can still hear everything very clearly, its just as if the overall volume is lowered with the plugs in.
If I have them in during a rave I have absolutely no ringing ears afterwards. That was really a serious relief the first time. Definitely not attending a rave without them now.

Re: Earplugs
I dont think it really matters on the quality of the system so much.. its just how loud and how long your there for that matters. Going to your first you shouldn't worry, just if you go regularly. I go pretty regularly to bass orientated nights and i dont intend to slow down.. so i should probably start taking care of my ears unless i want to be deaf by 40!Cornbreadddd wrote:Damn I've never really thought about this. Read a lot of people wouldn't go back after using ear plugs.. ill probably just invest in some cheapish ones and save for some moulded ones.vishes wrote:Ive bought those universal earplugs from BM Soho and I think they're really good.

Re: Earplugs
Yeah I've only been to one rave/night/thing so far, but me and two friends were taking a break halfway through and I literally could not hear anything my friends were saying, my ears felt almost bloated, I should probably invest in some earplugs in the future....
Re: Earplugs
First off: permanent hearing damage and tinnitus resulting from it is not necessarily a matter of cumulative damage: you might go to 20 raves where the music is too loud and don't suffer from it at all. But simply one rave with music too loud could equally result in tinnitus. The exact causes aren't clear yet, you might get tinnitus from something else entirely, but of course hearing damage from loud volume is the number one reason.
I suffer from tinnitus in my right ear. I had a hearing test done and my hearing was fine. But my tinnitus is probably allergy related. Still, I'm at a rave at least every two weeks and It started to really bother me how loud everything was. When my tinnitus started kicking in ,it became unbearable and I had to get plugs. I've been using them for 2-3 months now haven't regretted it one moment. In fact, I've started wearing them just to go to the pub as well. At least that way I can sleep when I get home and not have a shitload of noise in my ear.
I went from the doctor straight to the pharmacy and I got me two pairs of BLOX earplugs for 40€ (they have custom ones for musicians which I got). They're not moulded so you'll feel them in your ears and that might annoy certain people. It's all right for me. They have good results with lowering the volume up to 15-20 dB without significant frequency/quality loss. They do the job for me. In my humble opinion: the only reason to get moulded earplugs are:
A) You're already suffering from Tinnitus and/or Hyperacusis and need targeted protection against certain frequencies
B) You're a musician or DJ and you need your entire spectrum to produce/mix/play: fine-tuned earplugs are a must in that case. You can also wear them under headphones, which isn't the case with the ones I have now.
C) you can't bear standard earplugs in your ears: the sensation is annoying and it takes the fun out of a night.
Otherwise, look chemical, they have excellent ones for 15-20 quid.
