Quick question about KRK Rokit RP6/8 G2's

Post by Hazed » Tue Feb 22, 2011 8:44 pm

Hey, i'm sorry that there's more than likely hundreds of monitor threads on here already, so just a quick few question about these specific speakers.

I'm looking to buy a pair of these in the next week or so, tried a few different makes around the same price range and have my heart set on the KRK's. Any one else got them/tried and have any criticisms or issues they've had before I buy?

And also should I buy the RP8's? Someone said It might not be necessary to buy speakers of that size/volume especially in a bedroom style set-up due to acoustics or whatever, and that I should probably go for the model down.

ALSO, any recommendations of good mixers to connect them to my computer? This is the first pair of proper speakers I'll have owned myself (been using a lot of mate's set-ups and my college's studio) and I'm new to proper monitor set-ups.

Thanks in advance for any help!

My first set of monitors were RP6's, Good bit of gear for the price, decent clarity, quite bassy (maybe to bassy depending on the environment). These I had hooked up with an EMU0404, which at the time was decent for the price if you're just looking for a link from monitor to pc.

I'm on Mac, not PC, so can't use EMU0404. The Focusrite Saffire looks like a good piece of kit tho

Astral, just thought I'd say, follow you on Soundcloud. Great tunes man

I have the 6's, my boy has the 8's.

Both are amazing monitors. I chose the 6's because i felt the 8's would be to big for my apt. He has a small studio office and they are def a bit too bassy tbh. But there is a trebel adjust on the back that could possibly help

I just got a pair of 6's not too long ago. My first set of monitors and I've been really impressed with how much better my music is turning out. I'm working in a bedroom setup as well and feel like the 8's would have been overpowered for the space. I'm running my Audiophile 2496 through an ancient ass Radio Shack mixer then out to the monitors. I got the pair of 6's for 400 dollars.

As far as 6's versus 8's: when I described my setup to the guy I was buying them from he strongly suggested I buy the 6's since likely be working in a space any larger than a bedroom. Also I'll throw in that from listening to the 5's and from reading opinions on DSF and elsewhere that the 5's probably don't have enough low end response to make bass music.

I've got the RP8s. Using them in a pretty small room with a little bit of deadening. The 8s have a prominent bottom end that really doesn't develop (at least in my setup) until I am standing at least 5 feet back from them. Great monitors though. Picked em up for $200 a piece and am running them through an Alesis IO2 for the time being.

I recently bought the RP8s and so far have been very impressed. I'm currently in relatively small uni accommodation so they are probably slightly larger than necessary but I'll be moving into a bigger room next year which they should be perfect for. I'd recommend the RP6s if you plan on producing in your bedroom :)

Then I`ll make dubstep without bass.

I`m about to get 5`s. These will be my 1st monitors ever, everything I`ve been doing so far was on a pair of hifi speakers called coda 70.

What can I do about controling the volume on these monitors? I was planning on getting a pair of monitor stands (athletic box 100), but not anymore as my budget is already too stretched. Then I realized that I should have some sort of volume control for these new monitors.
I have two options: buy sm nano patch or use a small behringer mixer which I already have... what say you?

Consider waiting and saving for the 6's? I brought some heavy sine bass music to listen to at the store and for me there was a significant enough difference between the 5's and 6's as far as low end that I spent the extra money. It's likely to increase your cost two hundred dollars (US), but personally I'd say it's worth it. *shrug* :4: I considered buying 5's and adding a sub later, but that didn't seem to make sense.

I'd go with the mixer if you aren't using it for anything else. I hate not having a quick and easy physical volume switch right next to the mouse and keyboard.

I appreciate the advice but when I take all the matters into account like my current financial situation, my level of production and acoustics of the room I produce in, 5`s seem like a good choice. Believe me, I would rather go for the 6`s.

Fair enough. I understand the $$$ bit. And room acoustics are important. I feel like that doesn't get brought up often enough when people ask about monitors.

Even with the 5's I'm betting you'll :o when you listen to your tunes on the KRKs (especially compared to producing on hifi, that is what I'd been doing for years). Right before I bought mine I thought I'd really nailed a track, got monitors, went back to the drawing board on that tune.

Oh! No, no. Sorry if I miss spoke. The 5's and a sub wouldn't be a bad combo. I was just saying that it didn't make sense to me, personally, to buy the 5's and then a sub when I could buy the 6's and get the low end I was looking for.

It might work for you to, in the longer term, plan on buying a sub to go with your 5's. Having a decent sub around is never a bad thing! ;p

So generally good response for both, just depends on room size. Thanks guys!

Still just got to make up my mind on mixer now :|
