As i'm sure you are all aware MTV Base's UK counterpart recently released a 'Top Ten MC's Of 2010' list that was subject to a bucket load of controversy for; completely discrediting the hard work and accomplishments of highly rated UK m.c's 'Ghetts' and 'K Koke', removing 'Wretch 32' from an apparent original list then apparently not adding the likes of 'Chipmunk' 'Dizzee Rascal' and 'Lowkey' until the last minute (Lowkey and Chipmunk sharing a spot).
Whether or not the rumor's of an 'original' list are true we don't know, but we do know that the actual list that was released on Sunday 20th Feb 2011 through MTV Base at 9PM is inaccurate to say the least.
The three UK m.c's that we mentioned above have all had an unquestionably successful year ending with one of them (K Koke) getting signed to US rap legend Jay Z's label Roc Nation with an apparent advance in the region of £100,000.
Wretch 32 popped up everywhere across the UK during 2010, including a stage with rap legend P Diddy, ending up a nominee for for BBC's 'Sound Of 2011 Award' and MTV's 'Brand New For 2011'. The second being quite ironic.
Ghetts had an extremely intense 2011 recording tracks with all the big names in the urban UK scene and releasing two albums (Merry Xmas EP and The Calm Before The Storm), one of which he released as a free download.
Reacting to the list that was released on MTV Base Ghetts vowed to create a track in response and upload it the next day, which he did. The track, which suggests Lowkey is on the inside with MTV bossess, 'Who's On The Panel?' was available on Grime Daily's Youtube channel on the 21st of February 2011 along with the official video, the track being released for download on the 25th along with 'I Told Ya' (ft Rapid).
Lowkey took the opportunity to respond to the list and the 'Who's On The Panel' track releasing 'Top 1 Selected' (a freestyle over Ghett's 'Top 3 Selected' beat) which has caused a bit of a stir, some claiming it is a diss track to Ghetts, some saying it is just Lowkey defending himself. We at Black Budget think that Lowkey seems to have a gripe with MTV Base and rightly so but you'll have to make your own opinion!
What ever his intentions, Lowkeys 'Top 1 Selected' track has been taken badly by Ghetts who has instantly responded on Ustream via 'The Grime Report' while on air with fellow UK m.c 'Devlin' saying (presumably) about Lowkeys 'Top 1 Selected' "It don't take me a week, why is it gonna take me a week, in a week? like, one track in a week? what the F*ck!" and then spitting "Spit about spitting, Spit about living, Spit about Drugs and Spit about women" someone in the background then fills in with "Spit about Ghetts more than women" leaving Ghetts to finish with "They wanna spit about Palestine I don't live there,so I spit about Britain...". Ghett's then goes on to say that Lowkey made "a tune for Chipmunk ages ago, not even ages ago, a while back so...." going on to say "you see Lowkey yeah, you and all his fans yeah? You would not want him to war with me".
Ghetts' recent outburst on Ustream has only added fuel to the fire along with his latest track released on 1st March 2011; 'Dashed Out The Car' (ft Sharky Major), causing listeners and fans to speculate as to whether it is a diss track or not and if it is who to. In the midst of all this drama, one thing is for sure, we will keep you updated! Keep an eye on Black-Budget.com to see what happens!
