Legend of Zelda - Song of Storms dubstep remix

Post by Grimenoceros » Wed Mar 09, 2011 3:11 am

After many weeks of tweaking and mixing, I think I'm finally done with this track. Leave feedback if you can or tell me how I did! My second-ever dubstep track, about a month and a half into producing.

EDIT: New version linked! VV

Bump? Or at any rate could someone just tell me how to embed the soundcloud links like everyone else does? I'm THAT much of a noob.

the sample from zelda's quality doesn't sound so good, also i feel the panning during the intro is unnecessary and sounds weird on headphones
i like how you used samples from the game as little incidentals, the "listen!" just before the drop made me miss my nintendo 64, however they would benefit from some FX's, like reverb, delay, to give them a more dub feeling

also your beats is really muffled and drowned in the mix, your snare should be hitting way harder imo

and to embed your track use the soundcloud brackets you can see on top of the frame when you submit your topic

Ahh, yeah I did send all the sound clips to their own FX channel but I guess it needs some fine tuning. But oh yeah, there actually is no panning in the intro clip on my mp3, for whatever reason that ONLY occurred after uploading to soundcloud...very frustrating. And yeah, I've been getting a lot of complaints about the beat itself, that it isn't coherent with the riff. But I can definitely at least EQ the snare, that's easy enough. I just didn't want to overdo it.

And thanks, I realized mine wasn't coming up as an embed and it made me look pretty stupid haha.

Just about one month into it, taught myself everything by research and I'm still of course learning new stuff every day.

Thanks a lot man! Yeah since I'm so new I definitely would not get lazy with this, I'm well aware it's still got a lot more work to go, and I've already made several big improvements since I posted this, including making entirely new drum beats in the track, so it should hopefully remedy that complaint. And I'm using mainly Massive with like one of the pads being on Sytrus. Running on FL :D And I definitely will!

Tbh mate for being into this for only a month ure in a good path productionwise, my advice is to keep more edgy about what the composition should be, a dubstep mix of a zelda tune is not really what i wanted to hear, is more of a go further and try something fresh and make it yours ya kno? Productionwise youre in a good spot for being doing music for such short period of time, my recomendations overall is to keep tweaking on drums a lot cause theres much presence on synths but very lack of drum complexity. ull get a hold of it im sure ;) bigups mate!

Hmm yeah I hear where you're coming from about originality, that's what I tried to do with the first wobble riff since it's not the same melody, but then again this is kinda just a novelty track you know? Not really showcasing my own song-writing, just spinning an old video game favorite haha. Thanks a lot, I've been working hard to learn all the tricks in a short period of time and I'm glad it's showing at least a little. It's funny, all my drum sequences WERE a lot more active in earlier cuts but I kept getting complaints that they weren't complementing with the track so I dumbed it down. I'm still working on it so I'll see what I can do about that.

The one thing I've been obsessing over though is the tone/quality of the mid-range bass - is it dirty enough would you say or can it be taken further? I'm at my wits end about how to make it thicker, and all my resampling attempts have produced mushy shite :x

I like this a lot. Just needs a good mix, the synth at 1:05 is ear peircing. The drums are drowned out by the heavy wubs and other synths. Good arrangement and keys played, MIX IT. Compressions, eq, stereo imaging, panning, volume...etc.

You got it mangg, I've been working on fixing the drums for a while, I'm thinking some sidechain should help. I've already heavily mixed it so I guess I'll just continue focusing on those spots, and I'll add that high-range synth spot to my list haha, I know it can be shrill but I didn't know it hurt. I'll continue working on it!

Sometimes heavy isn't what you want. Took me years to figure out the sweetspot of mixing and im still not very good at it. Be creative and learn about signal flow. For example, is your eg routed before or after the compression in the signal? simple things like that. The first thing you wanna do with eq is "Cut" any frequencies out in a synth that clashes with the others. Sometimes just dropping an instrument all together and saving it for a solo later in the track can be the best thing. Keep it simple. Love the song though. Good Luck!

....Damn I never even paid attention to the flow of effects. The way the mixer is setup in FL I thought they were all just applied equally and evenly :O damn, I'll work back through that stuff and sort it out. I know about cutting and LP/HP and such to make everything sit well though, just need practice with it I'm sure. Thanks a lot man, I really appreciate honest and helpful feedback like this. Motivates me to keep getting better :D
