Pop my dubstep hymen, please (my first mix, 30min)

Post by thismeanswar » Tue Mar 15, 2011 9:47 am

So - after a lot of screwing around and never hauling my finger out of my arse, I figured I´d finally take a shot at making "my own" mix of the sort of dubstep that makes my feet move and the ceiling drip with sweat. Problem is - none of my friends are into dnb/dub/drumstep, so I´m hereby laying it out for any seasoned professional with 30 minutes to spare, hoping for some constrtuctive criticism. I guess most of you know the included tracks by heart, so you won´t have a hard time picking out my bits of fades and input.

Constructive crit is always good, like I wrote in the header this is my first mix ever created in my first ever session with Adobe Audition. The dubstep scene here in Oslo has really been taking off the past few years, but there´s still a lot of people who havent been introduced. So if the general attitude here is "spread good dubstep like explosive herpes", I´d love to be a superspreader and contribute to infecting more and more of Oslo Shit City here in Norway. I´ll shut up now - and any comments or suggestions are welcome.

Tracklist (I might have forgotten one or two)

Blame, Camilla Marie, Fuda Guy: "Star (Doctor P Remix)"
Kid sister: "Pro Nails ft. Kanye West (Rusko Remix)"
Dodge, Fuski, The Highbury Whores: "Pornstep (Original Mix)"
Whiskertwister: "Fucking tnuc"
Flux Pavillion, Foreign Beggars: "Lines in Wax"
Hoogs: "Acts of Terror (D. Thunders Dubstep Remix)"
Bandish Project: "Brown Skinned Beauty (Liquid Stranger Remix)"
Dayn: "Goliath VIP"
Reso: "Beasts In The Basement"
Doctor P: Sweetshop / mashed with the DrumnBass version by Friction, Kameo & Krooked Remix)

Cheers from Norway, hope at least one geek out there feels it.

..I forgot to mention - the plan is to build on the dnb/drumstep buildup in the last five minutes, and fill it with the sweet, sweet sound of 170bpm ear-rape. So a new version is in the pipeline, and any comments would refine that future version.

...and Soundcloud is down. Here's an alternative:

Sorry for spamming/bumping, but I guess it's due to technical difficulties.

Hey, wanna hear me whine? Cool: Dubstep won't move forward as long as newbies with an obsessive compulsion to create (fex. me) are left to dry with no responses whatsoever. Oh well, that's me being bitchy. I guess I'd rather go and make a new mix, and follow my gut since there's apparently not a huge feedback-culture here. But that's all good, I guess I just had my mind set on some criticism and had this image of dub-scenesters being supportive and idealistic when it comes to spreading the good word and spreading the great music. There! Rant over. I hate being grumpy, so I'd better shut my mouth.

People can't give you proper feedback if it's just not their thing. What do you prefer, abstaining or a 20+ page long beef thread about how shitty Doctor P or UKF can be ? Your mix is cool but I can't hear the different tunes between the transitions, it's like you're just beatmatching in the headphones and switching the crossfader left to right. What did you use to mix the tunes ? Software ?

First off, thanks for taking the time to type up an answer. You're absolutely right, if nobody likes it then I'm pissing up the wrong tree. I guess some vile hate would be nice in terms of motivation, if I'm pissing people off I'm doing something right. I have to admit I came in to dubstep really late. I've been a dnb-head my whole life in the Oxygen-scene here in Oslo alongside Teebee, Future Prophecies and Rawthang - so tearing out has been mandatory. I've grown up with hardcore rock, so when I came across Dieselboys 6th Session I was hooked. Evol Intent, Spor, Cause 4 Concern - that's where I'm coming from. I guess that explains the style. I didn't know that dubstep was so segregated, if I can use that word. Maybe the more tear-out style dub should receive a genre name of its own ? Anyhow, Im ranting.

Thanks for the feedback, Ill keep the longer overlaps in mind and work more on those. And I have to be honest, since this was my absolute first time i choose an easy way in and used Adobe Audigy to sow it together. That way I could have some creative freedom (the easy way) to for instance do that pitch bend - windup between the last two tracks, Sweeetshop + the dnb version. Oh well, Im saving up for hardware and I'll take it from there. I'll thank you in the liners on my first EP :D Being cocky as shit feels goood... Peace from Oslo, Norway

I liked your track selection.. downloaded it, and will listen to it again later, but at a quick listen sounded good.

I just Posted DUBSTEP for Dummies.. and am not expecting reviews, though it would be nice, it seems there's a new mix posted here every few minutes.

(Teebee is a god I have nearly all his Moving Shadow releases on wax :4: )

I've never heard of the software you're using tbh so I can't give you proper advice on it, just a suggestion: look aaaaaall over the internet for tunes you think deserve to get more hype (on soundcloud etc) then just get in touch with the producer and propose to mix his tunes or something like that, that will make your mix more interesting and will help out the producer :h: Because putting just crowd-pleasers one after another will be common and people will be less curious about your mixes :D But I guess that comes later when you get some skills. Keep at it !

Yay, thanks for all your input, it's greatly appreciated. I just realized that Soundcloud is packed full of producers that are still up and coming, and a lot of their tunes are awesome! Good advice about the crowdpleasers, my initial thought was to make mixes with songs I personally love, but like you say - unknown tunes makes for a lot more interesting mixes. Thanks again for your support!
