Mala at Bloc

Post by oldbulllee » Wed Mar 16, 2011 4:44 pm

Big up Mala for emptying out the room!

Whatever the fuck was going through his mind to reload a 'coki wobbler' THREE TIMES at 9.30 i'll honestly never know.

Absolutely fucking terrible, waited a bit to see if he'd bring it back but no, lowed it off back to the flat for a sly one before loefah.

...that's not how I remember it. He played a solid set and, this is just my opinion, but I don't think that tune with Coki's Spongebob in it was the full Spngebob tune, rether some mash up which developed into spongebob somewhere in the midle of the track. The intro, which yes he did rewind three times, wasn't the intro to Spongebob.
And Loefah wasn't a patch on Mala....IMHO.

this shit will never cease to amaze me.

finally saved up enough money to experience the UK for the first time this March. did FWD, DMZ, Dubloaded, BLOC...

and I come on here after some of the best nights I have EVER had, to find some anonymous kid behind a computer screen bitching about the stupidest little things. you realize how lucky you all are right?? you get to see these acts that kids all over the world dream about seeing, on a regular basis, a mere train-ride or car-ride away. I've waited years to finally get a chance to see Mala on his home turf, on IMO one of the best sounding soundsystems I have ever heard music on and his set was easily one of the best I saw at BLOC.

you're complaining about him reloading a Coki clanger too many times because it was only 9:30pm?! fwiw, that tune was completely deserving of that treatment (was not spongebob) and if you can't enjoy yourself at a party like that, I have absolutely no idea what to tell you. that festival is the best thing I could ever imagine or dream of and instead of going to one of the other 4 stages stacked with world class DJ talent, you chose to come on to DSF to bitch about a reload.

get a grip homeboy.

or just switch places with me and you can experience our shitty club soundsystems here in the States while I swim around in Funktion-One sub across the Atlantic.

Are you actually serious mate??

Talk about mindless negativity, he played three coki tunes in an hour, all of which were hype and got me and the crowd into the set and up for the rest of the night.
On top of that he played a massive deep medi and deeper selection with Pokes giving great support on the mic. Off the top of my head i can remember Vivek-Pulse, Quest- Wind Tunnel, Goth trad- Babylon Fall (personal favourite), Eyez VIP and Mountain Dread March.

I personally cannot believe you didn't enjoy his set, of course he played Coki they run a label together and a few of his tunes in a set are hype. What has the time got to do with anything? I think Guido, Gemmy, Mala, Pinch, Loefah and Joy all absolutely killed it. Only left the Subloaded stage for SBTRKT, absolutely massive night and sick weekend!

If youve got a problem with 3 reloads, stay away from DMZ.

And malas set was the highlight of that night for me, a perfect mixture of tunes old and new, deep and aggresive, dmz and others.

In fact, youre post is so strikingly different to any experience ive heard from talking to about 10/15 people about that set that you are in fact just a troll. Go away.

Clearly not a troll, his set just wasn't my kind of thing evidently. I adore Mala's music, obviously I was expecting the set to be vibes for some reason & not a hype one (obviously had the wrong idea in my head, pretty simple). Who cares if it wasn't to my taste's ya get me.

Anyhow, hope all of you chaps replying were all there for the entirety of Shackleton & had a good rest of weekend. Bloc was too good.

Peace.

Mala's set was brilliant. Pokes cracked me up too, especially going on about Deal Or No Deal - "The guvnor, 26 grand." Quality

System was weak in that venue though, stopped any of the sets being as enjoyable as they could have been.

Tis the only problem with bloc for me. For techno/house/anything else riding the kickdrum more theyre fine, but the systems they get really cant quite do "subloaded" justice. However, the single most thing that stuck out to me about malas set, was just how much heavier it was sounding on the rig than anyone elses! I dont know if he just cranked it into the red or whatever, but the bass on mountain dread march actually made even horror show sound a bit weak :o I guess I was right in the middle centre, could very well have made a difference.

Yeah it wasn't q pure meditative mala set, but if youve seen him often you'll know they rarely are. This set was actually aloooot lighter on the wobbles etc. than the last few times ive seen him. Think he played 3 coki bangers the whole set, and if youre not expecting an unreleased one to get at least 3 reloads, then youve got the wrong end of the stick lol

And then on top of that he played MDM, a couple of new VIVEK bits, distances remix of changes...he even finished with Alicia for gods sake :o (one of the highlights of the festival)

And one other thing, I guess weve got to assume this is someone making a new account to bitch about mala anonymously without his online ego mates thinking less of him?

I only watched half the Mala set as I've seen him a few times before so I went off to watch the end of Lando Kal & Rustie (who played the best set of the weekend imo) but from what I heard, Mala's set was solid. Really didn't want to tear myself away from it but wanted to go and see someone I hadn't seen before.

Each to their own though, I guess.

Yeah I know what you mean. Funktion 1 rigs are really good for clear mids and highs but I feel the bottom end is a bit flat and empty. I could still talk in that room without really having to shout, even stood quite near the front, near the right stack. They need to put the Dirt rig in there for the Subloaded night. That'd do it justice.

Really liked the arched video panel at the back though. Kept my addled mind occupied for ages!

respect to mala and all that but 3 reloads is a bit excessive. he did it at stealth a few months ago. i dont like reloads at the best of times but 3 on the same tune is pushing it even for him. hate on me if you want, its just my opinion...

I really enjoyed the clarity of the funktion-one. never heard the Dirt, Steppas, or Mungos rigs though, so don't really have all too much to compare it to I guess. Just used to the systems back home being so muddled and abrasive, it was really nice to be able to chat to the person next to ya and to be able to listen to about 30 hours of music over the weekend and not walk away from it with ears ringing.

Room 1 at Mass is Funktion-One right?

Nah. They do get in some extra funktion 1 rig to beef up the sound, and boy oh fucking boy...is it ever heavy (the pressure in that room can be insane) but to be honest, the sound aint all that (and thats quite mild!). James Blake/kode9 set at the 6th bday for example, when blake was dropping some of his messy synth laden tunes at the end, it was genuinely hard to hear what was going on. I think a happy medium somewhere in the middle is the one!

Oh, and Dirt and iration steppas are two fucking incredible rigs. Both pack the most unbelievable punch, without losing sound quality at all. Yeah they might not be quite as clear as the fairly quiet well organised funktion 1 rigs, but the overall experience is something else. Hard to pick between Dirt and iration, both just unreal...

Loved Mala's set, one of my favs of the weekend, infact I liked everyone i saw. I found Jamie XX to be a bit of a let down, and Aphex Twin coulda varied it a little haha.
Pinch was massssssive too.
