DID I RUIN DUBSTEP? I RUINED DUBSTEP.
I ruined dubstep. Someone shared it with me- I loved it- shared it with everyone I could- I thought I could make my own- I wouldn't talk about anything else. Dubstep is sick with the deadly virus: myself.
This beautiful thing was created and then grew because of the loving attention of its stewards and now it's out in the world and it's going to die. Well it won't die. It's doing great. But its' soul is going to die. It's going to be everywhere isn't it? I should have kept it to myself. You should have kept it to yourself. But if you had I never would have known dubstep. I don't know if that would have been better or worse.
I'm way late. I see this artform I love being perverted by all these joiners and I am them! I am betraying dubstep. I have already betrayed dubstep. I didn't know. I didn't know. I thought I was helping.
Why must popularity be contrary to creativity? It's not. A growing collective interest will spur development to a point and then you reach critical mass. then serious money becomes involved. rock didn't make it out with its dignity. It exists but its scattered and a little lost. Levis owns rock now. Vevo. And there's one like them with their eyes on dubstep.
I'm wrong in a sense. They won't take dubstep away. They'll take the name away. They'll take the essence away. They'll butcher the concept of dubstep. Dubstep will be appropriated by pop music instead of the other way around.
I am devastated. I don't see any way to avoid this. I haven't even enjoyed my first anniversary of having known dubstep. This is not the end of music. I know this. Change is the way of life. I know this. But dubstep is something very special. The act of listening to dubstep changes you as a person in ways hard to express, you get lost in dubstep... BECAUSE WHEN IT"S GOOD ART YOU CAN"T HELP BUT BE CHANGED, BE DISORIENTED. I feel entitled to more time with dubstep. I haven't had enough time. It is so new to me. I maybe even deep down thought I could spend the rest of my youth watching dubstep develop as an artform. But I done went and sold it down the river.
I'm done. I really do feel awful about this. I realize (of course) that statistically I have virtually nothing to do with this. But in principal, in an ethical sense, I have literally everything to do with this. I am sorry.

From the newcomers thread:

I was drawn here because of the forum's resources but I stayed because I sense a real community here. I'm writing from Louisiana (America) where I live. I couldn't tell you why I'm so consumed by the dub. I don't enjoy house or really any other synthy type stuff. But I love dubstep. There's not really a scene here but I feel myself changing under its influence. subtle changes. Anyway I love the womps you know, womps are great but anyone (I can't) make womps. I'm into all of it as long as it's done well. Sometimes a track is just so visceral I feel like I understand everything the producer is trying to communicate. And it's not just cool vibes, or like he's saying (or her, that would be hot. Are there any female producers?) 'I want everyone to rock out', but I'm picking up all sorts of emotion in dubstep. It's beautiful! Sometimes a track is just so sad! it amazes me that I get it. I'm not mistaken. I'm not making this up. You know this. some dubstep is heartrendingly sad. some dubstep is about how we miss being kids. I don't understand it but it's a truly excellent artistic medium. I'm fascinated by it. I had become very bored with contemporary music before dubstep visited the south. I'll post.

Re: DID I RUIN DUBSTEP? I RUINED DUBSTEP.
this is exactly how i felt for the whole of 2010.
now i feel about dubstep like about an ex who left you for some guido dickhead. i'm not mad at her, i'm not pissed. instead i'm smiling to myself looking forward to the day he breaks her heart. we know he's not good for her, and we know she'll miss me as soon as he ditched her for some other girl with a bigger rack. and she'll feel used, hopeless and broken. she'll look at me with tears in her eyes, a look that says "I'm sorry". but it's gonna be too late. she will never be the same, especially after all the coke and money. i'll be happy with someone else and she's gonna wither away like a flower no one cares for anymore.

This is such a melodramatic load of balls.

Can see where the OP is coming from in a way, it's a beautiful thing to find something you've never encountered before and instantly know you love it. Don't agree that popularity is ruining this music though, you've just gotta ignore the stuff you dislike, works for me
